Really ! With all the injuries, it's best to have a kickoff specialist on the roster I guess. Amazing.

The Bills placed safety Robert Blanton on injured reserve and waived TE Gerald Christian. They also re-signed kickoff specialist Jordan Gay.

Roster roulette is the defining characteristic of Whaley's tenure.

LOL...This guy sticks around here no matter what...Doesn't even matter though cause the season's been done, but man, Kelsay's got nothing on him.

He's the 53rd guy on the roster and serves a purpose.

True, not like we don't need anything but a 53rd guy kickoff specialist that no other team in the league wants to sign for a position no other team in the league has. We're always a step ahead and need us some of that sweet Jordan Gay locker room leadership.

It was in the original post. Blanton to IR, TE Christian released. 2 in, 2 out.

Ironic that this happens the week after Dan Carpenter won Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

How many times have they cut and re-signed this Gay chump? Really something to behold...and also hard to believe.

Probably did it because the Bills have 5 out of their next 6 games in New York State...OK, the Jets game is really in New Jersey. But the weather is probably going be bad down the stretch, and Carpenter doesn't seem to be a "kick-off specialist" himself. Kick-off specialists are so so hard to come by, that pretty much no one else has one...only thing I can think of.

They look kind of OCD about the guy. It's weird.

No doubt it's weird.

But the Bills probably think that they can drop him and then pick him up again at their leisure...and they would not be wrong. Doesn't seem like Gay has any pressing prospects to be an actual kicker of field-goals, extra points, and kicker-related things of this nature. Just the old kick-off specialist, which is not in high demand, I'd say.

But this madness has to stop sooner or later, or so you would think. Then again, I've seen madness of all sorts continue for who knows how long, with no end in sight...

I've mocked their roster moves enough with Gay and Cassell...I don't have any more in me.

Probably about the only 'name' they could come up with at such short notice. ;)

The timing does seem as though it's about right for when the weather gets nastier, so there's at least some rationale for it, bearing in mind the fact that the Bills like the idea of having the longer leg for kickoffs. It might also be that they are thinking about having to make a long kick to tie or win a game, so it does give them another option if needed.

Just curious who we had lined up at number 53 that was a better choice for a spot?

Some wasted energy on some of these posts.

Again. I'm beginning to think that Whaley has a secret relationship with this Gay fella.

What position? Gay can't kick field goals.

It would not surprise me in the least if given the opportunity, Gay can sharpen up his field goal accuracy and end up with a nice career in the NFL.

Sounds like the UDFA punter they added, Rehkow, can handle KOs. Not that Hauschka can't, but might as well save his leg.

I don't think Buffalo is likely to have any inclination of reserving a roster spot for a kickoff specialist. Around the league, there seems to be no tendency to teams to think they need to rest the leg of their FG kicker at the expense of a roster spot What teams try to do every year is at least have token competition at both punter and kicker positions. Rehkow provides both, but he's got an uphill climb at both spots. Teams place a premium on punters' ability to achieve hang time, and Rehkow struggles with that. At the kicker position it will simply be competition with a guy who has had success both kicking off and kicking FGs over a range of distances.

I have no idea if having someone else KO is good for a kicker or not. Just throwing it out there. And reserving a spot for a KO specialist is a waste, but Carpenter was horrible at them, so they had to do what they had to do.

As for Rehkow's hang time:

Bottom Line Rehkow's NFL future is as a punter, but his ability to handle the kicking duties if called on will surely add to his draft value and overall slotting. His hang time and accuracy numbers could be good enough to land Rehkow a spot in this year's draft.
