Tip from the days of yore for starting up a diesel in cold weather:
Turn on the ignition to heat up the glow plugs. Then turn the ignition off. Then turn it back on - you get a double heating of the glow plugs. Then start.
If that fails, light up a propane torch and play it on the crankcase to heat up the motor oil. That works for a gasoline motor too, of course.
