Down in Binghamton, ECC's hockey team faced off against Dakota College for the NJCAA championship.

So why the hell am I posting about it here?

Well, not because the Kats lost. Because as WKBW reports, late in the game(with seconds left in the third)an ECC player attacked the ref after getting out of the penalty box. He got a 10 minute match penalty...AND the game ended then and there....AND HE WAS ARRESTED.

No-not even in the Buffalo News' article on the game nor the AP's brief on the game through the Binghamton newspaper's website(both today).

However, this is going to be the last NJCAA title game ever due to a lack of teams participating in it.

I should note that Erie Co. Executive Mark Poloncarz(who has played hockey for his whole life & also coaches it)is none too happy about the incident; he's on record as saying he's going to talk to ECC President Jack Quinn(who's also a former Congressman)about it. (He also doesn't know how the ref's doing-and adds that he did talk to Quinn-and that he said the school will deal with the student per their procedures).

Add-on: the player in question could face assault charges.

He IS, however, suspended from ECC pending an investigation(per WKBW).

Yard: WBFO reports that the official who got cold-cocked was NOT seriously hurt.

For that, we can be thankful.

Thank God refs wear helmets now. I remember when they didn't. He could literally have died from slamming his head on the ice.
