Steven Hauschka shuffling off to Buffalo

After the Seahawks signed the guy who took one of the biggest kicks in franchise history — and missed it — Steven Hauschka had to move on.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the former Seahawks kicker will sign with the Bills, with the usual “barring any snags” language (which is going to be the #asexpected of this morning and early afternoon until deals can be official).

The Seahawks indicated they were content making a change when they signed Blair Walsh, the former Vikings kicker whose playoff chip shot miss helped the Seahawks steal a win in Minnesota.

Hauschka has been a consistently strong leg, but he’s missed 10 extra points over the last two seasons.

He’s still an 87.2 percent field goal guy, which is excellent.

Kind of a lateral move, I'm assuming cheaper than Carpenter.

Better FG kicker but worse PAT kicker if you look at last year.

Not sure, Carpenter made $1.75 million last season and I believe was scheduled to make $2.4 million in 2017. Hauschka was paid $2.7 million last season and was a F.A. I think he would of at least wanted the same amount and would have not signed with a team so quickly if he didn't get it.

$3 million per year seems rich for a kicker.

So we're still going to miss PATs every other game...

I would have preferred Nick Folk.

Makes big kicks and has no problem with bad weather.

From what I have seen out of him, he is elite in most aspects as a kicker. But he struggles with his extra points for some reason. I'd trust him to do a 55 yd field goal to win a game before I'd trust him with a XP to tie the game.

10 missed PAT's in 2 years? That has to be equal to one or 2 losses on average. If you can't trust a kicker to make it from 35 yards he's basically worthless

Yep. See Mike Nugent with CIN last season...

What are his career numbers outdoors, in December, on the East Coast?

It's amazing how much this new XP rule has seperates the elite from scrubs. Before this rule change Nugent, Hauschka, Walsh, and Goskowski were all viewed as solid kickers. Now all of them are almost a liability.

Damn.... 4years $12.4m. That seems a little rich

Ugh.

Maybe now they won't have to keep a 2nd kicker for kick offs?

Haha, so anyway, this as as far as I'll go...

Outdoors : XPM/XPA : 222/233 (only ever missed two otherwise), FGM/FGA : 146/161 (his best pct by a fraction)

He does have a strong leg, which is ideal for Buffalo weather.

The problem is those 10 misses were after the new rules. Anything before doesn't matter at all. To be honest no stat should include extra points before 2014 vs after.

He missed 3 before 2014, 10 since. All 10 since though were outdoors, He's perfect in XP's & FG's in domes last 3 years. That's alarming.

Don't like it.

10 missed extra points is ridiculously bad.

Good. Go for 2 after TD's with Tolbert here and let him nail the FG's.

Finally, some excitement !

It looks like 5 of the 6 missed XPs last year were blocked-that could be more of a line or ST scheme in Seattle. Also 2 of 4 the year before were blocked, so 7 of the 10 missed XPs were blocked-It may not be his fault.
He also saves a roster spot by handling his own KOs. Definitely an upgrade over Carpenter/Gay.

Don't know what to make of that. Why does it only happen outdoors ?

I think he is close to 90 % on his field goal % for his career , Id take that vs 5 missed extra points a year any day.

K Steven Hauschka, Bills

Grade: D

Kickers are better than ever before, which makes it easier to find a decent one. The Bills had brutal kicking last year, though, with Dan Carpenter struggling mightily -- 19-of-25 on field goals and five missed extra points on 45 attempts. After adjusting for the distance of his kicks, Carpenter cost the Bills 7.9 points of field position, per Football Outsiders, which was the fifth-worst rate in football.

Throw in the league's third-worst touchback percentage on kickoffs, and it's no surprise the Bills wanted to upgrade at kicker this offseason. It's bizarre, though, to commit a remarkable sum for a kicker to Hauschka, who Seattle coach Pete Carroll unceremoniously dumped in public earlier this year. Hauschka wasn't much better than Carpenter on kicking plays last year, costing the Seahawks four points of field position, mostly on extra points; the NC State product actually missed six of his 35 extra-point tries and failed on two kicks inside 30 yards.

Hauschka was much better on kickoffs and has been solid in years past, so it's not unreasonable for the Bills to bring him on board. It's the money that seems weird. After giving Carpenter a four-year, $10 million deal and being disappointed by the outcome, why are the Bills giving Hauschka four years and $12.4 million? Greg Zuerlein and Nick Folk are both still free agents. Chandler Catanzaro signed for undisclosed terms with the Jets, which usually means a small deal. The Bills are paying a premium at a position where doing so isn't necessary and doesn't guarantee success.

Holy stupid

Kickers are better than ever!!!????? The difference between a good kicker and bad kicker is night and day from where it was 10 yrs ago. We have been seeing so many kickers, elite and solid kickers missing 25 yrs kicks. I saw Janakowski a year ago miss like 3 40-50 yd field goals in one game. Goskowski had a terrible season when he was looked at as the number one kicker by far last year

Then the fact that the article then brings up Catenzero as a better option is laughable. Kickers are seemingly at there worse right nw, I mean Tampa signed a kicker in the 3rd round who went on to be the worst kicker in the NFL
