Makes some sense. Preston Brown is a middle linebacker, and McDermott has come right out and said he's assuming Ragland will start. Brown is less athletic than Ragland at a position where McDermott has enjoyed superior athleticism in the past. Brown could end up being a liability when he has to play, because of that athleticism deficit. There are, I'm sure, defensive schemes around the league that don't put quite the premium on athleticism at MLB that McDermott has. That means Brown might have more value as trade bait than as a backup for the Bills. After all, he is still a young player with significant starting experience. That should hold some value.

I've been saying this for 3 months

We won't get much for him in a straight trade, but maybe packaged on draft day in a trade down he might bring an extra (or higher) pick that we wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

Ragland is coming off a serious injury and Trading Brown now would be a typical Buffalo Bills move.

Another BLUEPRINT leading to last place

He might be useful to a 3-4 team looking to make a playoff push. Or maybe SLB as he played his best under Schwartz I think. Conditional pick in 2018 perhaps.

It'd be a good idea to move him now as he's not going to be re-signed with Ragland on the roster filling the same large thumper type LB role.

MLB is the most important position on defense.....a scrub won't cut it

Well what if Ragland gets hurt like everyone else does. What is our depth?

I can't help but remember how good he was in his rookie year before Rex ruined him.

If someone offers Whaley a 4th round pick this year for P. Brown, he should jump at it. He's not going to re-sign with the team at the end of the year and it's pretty evident that he doesn't fit in with the new defensive scheme.

Brown was a 3 down lb. He is athletic. More proven vs pass than rack and. This would be stupid.

Mid 3rd or better and you jump at this, we have Ragland and can pick up a decent depth player down the line.

The misinterpretation of coaches statement has been 100% refuted by Sal Capaccio and the Bills organization. It's been clarified that they'll "start-off" looking at Ragland at MLB... Not that he's penciled in to "start" at MLB.

Hypothetical here.. what if Ragland tears an ACL during training camp and misses the season...

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts.

I suppose if Ragland got hurt perhaps we'd get a LB who can actually cover in the game.

I'm still holding out hope that Zach Brown can't find a suitor.

I'm a little shocked we haven't kicked the tires of Gerald Hodges as he has ties to our DC in Minny where he was listed as an OLB. He put up good stats with the 49ers last year and at this point in free agency think be pretty cheap.

I'd give Hodges a look also.

If we could just stick to one style of defense, we wouldn't have a bunch of 3-4 LB's sitting around all pigeonholed at the MLB spot.

Maybe what we could do at some point is to follow the trend of some CFB defenses (including Penn State) where they essentially have two box LB's and one "tweener" (Star for PSU). Maybe not ideal for what McDermott wants to do, but would be able to make better use of the bigger LB's we have.
