Mahomes to work out for Bills, reportedly works out for Jets

There isn't much rest for Patrick Mahomes these days.

Roughly 48 hours after the New York Jets were one of 28 NFL clubs to watch Mahomes' pro day workout on Friday, the club wanted an even closer look at the former Texas Tech quarterback. Mahomes worked out for the Jets on Sunday, according to the Houston Chronicle. That makes six teams that have worked out Mahomes, along with the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, Los Angeles Chargers, Arizona Cardinals and New Orleans Saints. And with three-plus weeks left before the draft begins on April 27, there is plenty of time for other clubs to do the same. In fact, the Buffalo Bills will work him out next week, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
The Jets certainly qualify as a team that would have a need-based interest in a quarterback, be it Mahomes or someone else. The club has journeyman veteran Josh McCown, and two unproven youngsters in Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, at QB.
The Jets hold the No. 6 overall pick in the first round, and the No. 39 pick in the second. While Mahomes isn't expected to be selected as high as No. 6, he could be long gone by the time the Jets' second selection comes around. The Bills shored up their QB situation when they re-signed Tyrod Taylor this offseason, but it's not stopping them from taking a closer look at Mahomes.

The one thing that really bugs me about Mahomes is his pocket presence/ability to operate from a pocket is pretty poor. He's very similar to Taylor in the way he can get antsy in a pocket, he'll move into a sack or break the pocket for no real reason. His physical tools are only rivaled by Kelly, but Mahomes has a lot to learn about the pro game.

Good thing we have Tyrod for 2 more seasons.........if we take a QB early he can sit and learn for a couple seasons.

Small hands and even a worse Texas Tech College coach that has a history of putting out good College QB's but bad NFL QB's

Not knocking any of this suspect QB class but I wouldn't be surprised if we passed on QB and picked up a cut Vet prior to camp. Already have a developmental QB in Jones and I'm not tossing him yet.

Next year is the good QB class. That's why TT has the new 1 and done QB contract.

I don't enjoy pigeonholing guys because of scheme, but I am just incredibly leery of guys who come out of those kinds of pass happy attacks.

Sometimes though, you have to. College offenses have short windows to succeed with players, and the luxury of recruiting for system against schedules and conferences that do the same. Temp players going through established systems...an air raid coach isn't going to flip into west coast offense, or running game, a west coast guy isn't going to flip into air raid. The larger amount of teams mean teams can stick with their approach and feed on a certain number of inferior colleges every year in most cases. No one cared about Tebows windup if it worked in the college game, no one cared to work Manziel under center with a playbook if it worked in the college game, no one cared if Mahomes threw on most downs with limited reads if it worked.

The funnel narrows in the pros, where coaches have shorter time spans with longer term players. A bad choice costs you years you're stuck with against changing dynamics with a smaller amount of teams that have coaches with smaller windows for success and no way to game their schedules and fatten up stats.

That said, the thing I like about Mahomes, and I agree with Draftboy, is that he knows what he doesn't know and is making an effort to address it. Like, never working under center, he practiced and scripted his pro day workout to work under center because he knew pro teams are concerned about it. He's focused on a future in the pro game though whether or not it works is another story. Compare that to a guy like Tebow who didn't work to correct his throwing motion until he found out it wouldn't work in the pro game and by then he couldn't. A Tebow doesn't think he has to change, a Mahomes knows he needs to.

I don't have a clue what Cardale thinks, but by now McDermott does, so we'll see, but it wouldn't surprise me if Night Train's comment pans out and they don't even take one.

If we do take another developmental guy, I think we're screwed anyway, because all they have to develop one are career WR coaches, so I think they'd veer toward a guy from pro style like Peterman.

                    I guess we'll see.

BUF has had QB questions for years. Years.

If Mahones is there at their 2nd, I feel they should pull the trigger. What's to lose?

I'm in the boat that doesn't want us to draft a QB in a dodgy class, when there are plenty of other talented guys in it, who will help your team. Due diligence, by all means, but success isn't going to come through stacking up on project QBs.

You actually have to try developing them for more than just one year, in an environment that is actually looking at developing them. Jones might have the best arm, in all the NFL atm, it would be nice to see if he can make the necessary steps forward this year, to deserve a backup spot, at least. You can then grab another guy next year, and lose whichever vet you have as backup this season. Repeat the cycle until you do find, and develop, your franchise guy.

Imho, there are going to be too many QB 'needy' teams out there this draft, and there will be a flurry of activity, when the QBs start going, and we would be better served by gashing someone for more picks, who is chasing a QB, than worrying about picking another guy who is going to need a couple of years to be ready to be a backup.

The general talk before the 2013 draft, was that the QBs were both not ready, and not that good. That general talk was proven to be true, in spades. Similar things are being said about this class, and while there might be better talent there overall, the need for it to be developed, still remains.

There is an abundance of talent elsewhere in the draft though, according to pundits, so in a year where we don't have many picks to begin with, we would be far better served in using all of them, on guys who have a genuine chance to compete for a roster spot.

Mahomes looks the part and speaks the part, Whaley probably loves him.

That doesn't mean he's the next EJ but thats why he liked EJ.

Mahomes intrigues me, but not if I have to trade up. I never wanted to touch EJ. Don't want any part of Mitch Trubisky or Deshaun Watson.
