As Ken Campbell of The Hockey News notes, POSSIBLY gearing up for the playoffs.

No, he's not on something. :D But he does add that this is a best-case scenario.

Thoughts, everyone?

Look at the year again(2020). And, for that matter, the title of the thread.

They should be contending for a playoff spot this season.

Exactly my thought. It better not be 2020 before they are gearing up for the playoffs!

Saw a chart recently about teams that have added the most wins and lost the most wins (on paper)

They expect the sabres, as is, to drop in points next year

I believe the chart was done by the hockey news. I'm expecting a step backwards myself

Why? The D has improved and that will help Lehner, who was already playing well. I'm not a fan of Pommers, but he's a mild improvement over Ennis. And all the young guys should take a step forward. And the coach and players being on the same page helps.

I'm not saying this team doesn't have holes or that they're Cup contenders. But I see no reason why they can't improve on last season and snag a 7 or 8 seed.

Shallow wings and the d is still weak. Alot of young players need to improve at the same time to do that. They still need major help

If I had to guess where the Sabres will be in 2020, I would say Quebec City.

Carolina has a better chance of landing in Quebec City than the Sabres do. Or WILL. Hell, Arizona has a better chance!

(And the irony of one of the former WHA/NHL teams landing in ANOTHER WHA/NHL market is not lost on me.)

I think that is correct.

That was true last year, and I'd argue that we will be better on the wings with the young guys having a year to improve and Pommers being healthy. And while the D is still weak, it's improved over last year.

I agree they need help but I still say they can take a step forward over last year.

I don't see the Sabres moving. First, Pegula didn't invest in Harborcenter and all the improvements to the arena just to pick up and move. Second, the Sabres get good support even when they aren't winning. There are plenty of markets that struggle to get support even when they are winning: Carolina, Florida, Arizona come immediately to mind (although Arizona is probably safe because they are trying to correct the east-west imbalance and moving a western team east is only going to make it worse).

They should be contending for a playoff spot this season.

If our defense improves dramatically, we'll be fighting for the 8th spot.
