View Full Version : Did we really get that much worse today?

Sammy was going to miss games anyways almost guranteed, Mathews will at least play, and Darby for Gaines? Wash, especially if our Dline can get pressure, all in all... it's not like we were a 12-13 win team and all of a sudden a 2 win team.. were still an 8-8 team that with a couple bounces can go 10-6 and make the playoffs.

Darby vs Gaines ain't a wash.

Gaines is awful.

Darby at least looked great as a rookie.

Today is great if you want a proper rebuild in Buffalo. Less encouraging if you had any enthusiasm for 2017. Long term vs short term.

Ok but Mathews has proven more in the NFL than Watkins... just casue Sammy is suppose to be good he hasn't showed he has it in the nfl yet.

Gaines looked great as a rookie too. Similar career trajectories other than Gaines injury.

I would not argue that Gaines is better than Darby. Darby is better and more athletic, but Gaines was fine as a rookie. He lost season two to an injury and needed last year to work his way back. I think he'll be OK this season.

Yeah but the metrics say EJ Gaines is 3rd worst in the NFL and gave up the most touchdowns in the NFL last season...

That sounds worse than Chris Watson.

I guess it depends on his foot. He was a 6th round pick that won a starting job and played well, that's really rare for rookies and usually it's not enough to just play well - you need to play way better than the alternatives. Then gets injured and comes back as a mutant clone of Chris Watson and Daryl Porter.

I guess we find out how good our pro personnel department is now.

Yeah well yesterday I thought we had a small chance if a lot of things went right, especially with the Fins as Jets looking so bad. Today I see it as no chance and it doesn't even seem like they're trying.

Unless we're assured to be the worst team in the entire league like the Colts in 2011, there's no point to tanking. Let's say we draft 3rd overall but miss out on Sam Darnold and Josh Allen, was any of this worth it? What's the point if there's no savior like Andrew Luck waiting there for us?

Or...what happens if neither QB declares? Neither of them are seniors who are completing their eligibility.

With the fish and Jets looking so bad, that's 4 wins. If NE rests guys in the 2nd game against us, 5-1 in the div. That means we only need to go 5-5 in the rest of our games to get 10 wins and prob make the playoffs.

Highly unlikely, I know, but it was a path. I don't think that path is open anymore.

Okay, I think we should sit down and have a talk with our young drought. First, you are going to be given a lot of credit card offers, turn them down. Also, you will be eligible to vote this year, star in porn/ look at porn, smoke, and you will be living on your own when you go to Scumbag University of Central Kansas this fall. You will also be able to buy a gun, register for the draft, and sign up for the military without my permission. So here is the deal Droughty O'playoff. Avoid credit cards, go to junior college first, and get scholarships and work study instead of loans. Further, start a small savings account now. Lastly, look I know since your mom and her girlfriends, the Jills, left town because Uncle Ralph would not be their sugar daddy you have become confused. How shall I say this, the women of Scumbag U are mighty fine, just wrap it up because you don't want to have to pay child support.

We're not bad enough to truly tank, IMO - I still think we're somewhere between 6 and 8 wins. Granted, we have so many high picks now we may be able to trade up in the first to get the QB we want, if thats the plan.

Worse ? Slightly but we may win the same number of games.

Like the fact they are thinking ahead to the loaded 2018 draft. I'll give these guys a A for balls. It's about time we had this type of thinking, long term. Build something instead of putting band-aids on the roster.

Not me. People gave Whaley the same A for balls when he traded up for Sammy.

I'm looking forward to the next presser where maybe they attempt to explain all this.

Wasn't Watson the guy Wade Philips called a great punt catcher or am I thinking of someone else?I believe the actual quote was, "He's more of a punt catcher." That was not to say he was great at catching, just implying he was lousy at returning.

My friend is convinced we are making the playoffs and that these were not tank deals. Says we improved at CB and WR. He also says Tyrod is a top 15-20 QB.
He also says we will get one of the top QB's next year because teams will have to trade with us due to our ammunition of picks... idk why we'd be eager to get rid of our top 15 QB who took us to the playoffs but who knows...

So there's that

I think we got similar production and traded "upside" for draft picks. But that upside made it easier to be optimistic.

I'm still worried about the offense. I think the D will return to preRex levels of dominance and pressure, even without Darby.

I'm not "convinced", but I'd agree with most of that. I think in terms of production, we got a WR that's been more productive than Sammy despite Mark Sanchez, Sam Bradford and Carson Wentz throwing him than ball. I think we got worse at CB, but there's some "maybe not" available and now that our Dlineman don't have to drop into coverage our DBs should have an easier time. And Tyrod is definitely in the 15-20 range. We're marginally worse, with some draft picks.

But we lost the lottery ticket of "What happens if Sammy actually gets and stays healthy". We traded beta for ROI that's shrewd portfolio management.

Oh, and left out that Darby sucked balls last season.

Two points, oh great myopic one...

1) Who didn't suck balls last year in Rex Ryan's lousy jape of a defense?

2) And I'm sorry, but when did Ronald Darby add a year ending injury to his resume? And when did Darby give up the most touchdowns of any cornerback in the NFL? When did analytics deem him the 3rd worst corner in the NFL?

Oh that's right, all that **** applies to EJ Gaines, not Ronald Darby.

The Darby trade was unnecessarily stupid. We traded him to get some bum slot receiver who's also in a contract year just like Sammy.

The Sammy trade I can understand. The Darby trade, not at all.

So you're on the "we got better" train?

I don't understand that one.

The tank one almost makes sense though.

Jordan Matthews has a bum knee btw and can't play outside, so I dont see how he's such a sure bet to produce. Gaines is coming off injury, ****ty play, and doesn't have an extra year on his deal the way the 23 y/o 4.3 DB did.
