Broncos sign RB Jonathan Williams to practice squad

Broncos sign RB Jonathan Williams to practice squad

Jonathan Williams found a new home a day after clearing waivers.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that the former Buffalo Bills running back signed with the Denver Broncos' practice squad. The second-year pro will get a $510,000 salary, per Rapoport, a big figure for a practice squad player.

The Bills surprisingly cut Williams over the weekend after it appeared he was in line for backup duties. The 23-year-old was not claimed off waivers on Monday, making him a free agent. Williams earned 94 yards on 27 carries and one touchdown in 2016.

Any team could potentially sign Williams off the Broncos' practice squad. Denver could also promote him to the active roster.

The Broncos currently boast a running back corps of C.J. Anderson, Jamaal Charles, Devontae Booker (dealing with a wrist injury) and rookie De'Angelo Henderson.

I don't know. I'm one of those says rb's are not difficult to find, but my last thought on the matter is that they didn't need to make themselves have to look for another younger one on the path forward. Williams was too young, promising and inexpensive for this staff to give up on after one preseason, whatever his perceived shortcomings. I just don't think we needed to add to the shopping list.

Practice squad? He's much better than that.

I do want Jordan Johnson back in B-lo.

          It's quite odd, yes.

But he's gone, so let's move on to the RB situation in BUF, now.

Per Broncos beat writers, his salary on the PS ($500K) means that he will likely soon be on the active roster.

Why wasn't he already? They have a 6th round RB on their active roster and he looked bad in pre-season.

McD also mentioned he doesn't play ST's. Time will tell if they made a mistake.

There's more to the story. You don't keep a $500,000 player as the 5th RB inactive on the practice squad. Booker has a wrist thing going on. It looks like they are about to decide activity level change on one of their other backs.

In any case, if the Broncos don't activate him quickly you can bet somebody will pluck him after week 1. I can't imagine there are zero RB injuries in week 1. And he'll be the first player that teams look to.
