What The Hell Is Going On With The San Francisco 49ers Fan Base?

I'm sure a lot of players on the Rams and 49ers played in front of more people in their high school days...

Sure, the 49ers suck but this is a storied franchise with 5 Super Bowl Championships.

The Bills haven't been to the playoffs since 1999, have zero Super Bowl victories yet our fans have continually sold out that beautiful stadium in Orchard Park, NY no matter what. Even at the end of the year in crappy weather with the playoffs out of sight, Bills fans still show up with 40 to 50 thousand people strong.

    Why?

Because going to a football game in Buffalo is all about the tailgating party, football, friends and family. We're a tightly knit community that likes to party and have a good time in the middle of winter.

The official attendance for last night's game at Levi's Stadium was 70,178.

    Tongue in Cheektowaga...

A picture is worth 60,000 empty seats.

So what the heck happened to the San Francisco 49ers fan base?

Levi's Stadium is 45 miles southeast of San Francisco in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Is it the location of the stadium? Is it the fact that it was built in a way that the sun roasts everyone so equally?

The 49ers had a really good thing going at Candlestick Park. When the team wasn't good, they still had good crowds of fans at their games, even in the rain filled seats full of yellow and red.

45 miles is a long way to go on top of whatever travel time fans had in year's past.

If the Bills moved to Fredonia, NY....

Distance between Buffalo and Fredonia in miles and kilometers. Driving distance and how to go from Buffalo, New York to Fredonia, New York. How long does it takes to arrive.

That would add on about 1 hour of drive time. Is that the cause of such low attendance?

I don't think that is the main problem.

    The main problem is this:

Banned behavior at the new 49ers’ stadium would include throwing a football, making too much noise, and sitting in someone else’s seat.

Limiting tailgating: no beer kegs, loud music, and playing sports (games of catch) in the parking lot.

You're not allowed to throw a football in the parking lot in Santa Clara, CA because the people that run the city are mostly communists.

For some odd reason I don't think they have an RV parking lot either...that would be too much fun and too much freedom for the peasants to enjoy.

I thought the liberal democratic people's republic of California was all for having a good time and letting people live free?

I think the main reason why Levi's Stadium is mostly empty is because the people can't tailgate and have a good time without worry.

If you can't throw a football to your friend, son, daughter, husband, wife, etc....then why in the hell go to the game at all?

Everyone is high and got lost on the way back to the seat to their seat is the reason.

49ers fans are adept at going to games higher than a kite. Been that way since 1980, at least.

Is the stadium too far away, or is Silicon Valley's lack of football, "culture," the culprit?

In Orchard Park, if a police officer sees you drinking a Blue on Southwestern Blvd, he could give a **** and can't wait to get home to drink a Blue too.

In Santa Clara, if a police officer sees you drinking a Corona on your way into the game, he could give you a ticket.

I think that is the main problem - a lack of tolerance for people that like to have a good time, party, be social, and celebrate the game of football.

You'd think that Californian socialists would be down with that, but they're obviously not.

The average San Francisco 49ers feels what right now?

Left behind in favor of corporate/global pursuits.

A couple of reasons for that pic. I'll start with the devil's advocate:

        1) That game started 5:30 PCT. I'll be generous and say that some people had to clock out and fight rush hour before getting there.

Now, to the real reasons they are lacking in fans:

        1) PRAYER TO THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR -- The Niners had a cool, historical stadium in Candlestick that was downtown. They decided to move it an hour's drive away to a new, "better" stadium, which entails:

-- a huge increase in ticket prices
        -- outrageous parking prices
-- like you said, limited tailgating or, as they do here in DC, tailgating passes that you need to buy in order to have the "privilege" of setting up a grill and a cooler
-- a culture that supports tickets being sold to companies and subsequently given to clients, rather than a culture which encourages natives to buy tickets

This is why I hope the Bills will stay in RWS as long as possible. That is a fan-friendly stadium. When I go to watch a game, I don't need a bunch of restaurant options, or WIFI, or any other amenity other than the beer guy coming by my section regularly. The Packers and Bears are allowed to have their old-ass stadiums, why can't we?

            1. Long drive
            2. Crazy inflated ticket prices
            3. Traffic nightmares to enter and leave the stadium
            4. The team stinks
            5. Even the rival team, the Lambs, are underwhelming

Nice to see the NFL killing football in every California location.

Have people even watched what's happened in SF over the past few years?

Jed York is one of the few people who can make Russ Brandon look like a competent football guy.

If he doesn't fire Shanny, Jr. after a year or 2...it might be a start at restoring a bit of credibility back to their franchise...but he lost their fanbase about as fast and as hard as a person can.
