    Competent coaching

It looks like we have it. It's been a long time since we've seen it.

    This looks like a team.

Competent head coaching as well as defensive and special teams coordinating. The offense and clock management could still use some improvement.

That said, much better place than we were in with Rex.

That was a big takeaway I had as well, especially on Denver's fake punt. The punt return unit kinda looked like they expected it, to be honest.

I still don't expect much at all out of this year, but I think there's some positive signs. Our defense looks tough, with the right mentality despite being essentially a bunch of no-names. Offense obviously still has issues, but I expected as much since it wasn't really addressed. Nice to see some competent play plus a bunch of high level draft picks available to us next year.

Looks to me too like the players are buying in. I noticed more than a few times where they correctly pulled up or otherwise avoided the late, stupid hit when I was expecting it. They're starting to play with self-discipline and better awareness as well as plays develop, without that sense of every man for himself that's been all too common when something goes wrong. Maybe a "taking care of business" approach.

I'm pretty happy about what I've seen so far all in all. Nods also to Beane (Gaines and Matthews can play), and Dennison (called a more aggressive, effective game than I expected).

That's the thing, if you can keep it in perspective, it's promising for once, and not desperate.

They still gifted Denver a TD with penalties.

I actually agreed with the call. We were on the 40 yard line so giving up 5 yards to try for an offsides is a good risk. If the punter has the leg to reach the goal line from the 45 or 50 yard line then the 5 yard penalty isn't that big of a deal

Note that I said pointedly said "starting". They look a lot different to me and that doesn't mean they're there yet. I have to consider it improvement and a plus toward something.
