    Take Note - Defense Ranking

Lots of people here wanted Dareus gone and now he is. Whether you like the deal or not, isn't really the point of this thread.

Much of the discussion has been about how talented Dareus was and how well he fit within the current scheme.

At the time of his trade here are our defensive rankings:
Rush Defense - 3rd in NFL
    3.4 YPC
    4 TD
    84.5 YPG
    3 FF

Pass Defense - 20th in NFL
    63.5% Completion Pct
    7.0 YPA
    5 TD
    9 INT
    13 Sacks
    259 YPG

    Defensive DVOA Rankings - 8th (-10.8%)

Let's see how these numbers do over the remainder of the season.

It's not whether we wanted him gone. McDermott wanted him out of the locker room and sent a message.

      The next draft. 2 1st, 2 2nd, 2 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th

This will be a fine rebuild....the right way.

If Dareus plays enough, the pick can be a 5th rounder.

Yes, this is pretty significant. The end numbers will reflect the impact of a rotational DT who turned it on or off as he felt like it. Dareus himself didn't even provide reliable data in his percentage of the snaps.

Injuries to EJ Gaines and Humber also have an impact.

To be honest I think they're coached up and overachieving anyway. Will still be interesting to see how the defense ends up.

You're better than this man. Too many variables to determine if ONE player had that much of an impact. The injury to Gaines ensures that Shareece Wright has to ****ing play. And now we have to play a rookie in Milano taking over for Humber. Also, teams will figure out, if they haven't already that Alexander can't cover anyone and it will be exploited.

Systematically dismantling the mess that Doug Whaley brought to Buffalo. The winning is proving how wrong Whaley was in his approach.

Dareus was the big chunk I thought they wouldn't be able to unload this season.

If anyone can "slap" Dareus back into reality, it would be Doug Marrone. They just re-upped Telvin Smith as well.

Than we shouldn't expect to see much of an impact on the standings, should we?

Same thing. Too many variables. You can't say Dareus had a big effect on them being 4-2, he hasn't even played much, much less all that well when he did, until last game.

                      We'll see.

We know that Beane & Company are good at dumping previously high-picked and costly players fearlessly. Let's see how good or lucky they are at drafting. Those picks mean nothing unless they translate into good players, and that may or may not happen as well as people might assume.

That's a bit of a cop out. Dareus only plays 33% of the snaps but we know that's almost exclusively on run downs so we should be able to see a direct impact on the run defense. The pass defense impact may be harder, if not impossible, to measure.

I expect the rush defense to be affected. I just hope it's not a significant enough change that we revert to the Pettino defense that consistently was gashed up the middle, between the tackles. That is my concern.
