Tight end Walls agrees to deal with Packers

Opting for a chance at a potential championship instead of considerably more money, unrestricted free agent tight end Wesley Walls has decided to join the Green Bay Packers for what figures to be his final NFL season, ESPN.com has learned.

Walls, 37, chose the Packers over the Washington Redskins, who had offered him a more lucrative contract. He will sign a one-year contract with the Packers, with a signing bonus of $25,000 and a $755,000 base salary.

The 14-year veteran will count just $475,000 against the Green Bay salary cap because of a rule instituted last year that grants a team a cap break when it signs a veteran player to a minimum base salary contract. It is believed that Washington owner Daniel Snyder, who negotiated late into Sunday night with agent Jimmy Sexton, offered a one-year contract worth about $1 million.
