MANKATO -- The Vikings will spend the next week contemplating whether to make another personnel change on defense.
Free safety Willie Offord has demonstrated improvement over his rookie season, but the Vikings are not yet convinced he will be ready to handle the position full time when the season opens Sept. 7 at Green Bay. Offord is also battling Brian Russell and Jack Brewer for the position, but the Vikings are now revisiting the possibility of moving cornerback Brian Williams to safety.
The team has mulled the change since drafting Williams last year, but he entered camp competing with Ken Irvin for the right cornerback job. However, Williams has missed three days of practice because of a strained hamstring and did not participate in Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage. The Vikings hope he can return by Wednesday, and if none of the safety candidates emerge by then, Williams could make the switch.
