Nearly two weeks ago, Steelers right guard Kendall Simmons was seriously ill and laying in a hospital bed.
He was diagnosed with diabetes and high blood sugar that has caused him to lose 30 pounds, sit out the first 11 practices of training camp and wonder when he will be able to help his team again.
He's been the perfect patient, however, meeting regularly with UPMC doctors and nutritionist Leslie Bonci, and giving himself two insulin injections a day -- something he may have to do for the rest of his life.
Simmons, the team's first-round draft choice in 2002, said he hopes to start doing some drills this week, but he is still a week or two from participating in a complete practice. His weight is on the rise -- up to 305 late last week, not far from the 313 pounds that team officials put on the roster before he got sick.
