Hard work, flexibility paying off for former QB Curry

NAPA, Calif. (AP) -- As far as wide receivers go, Jerry Rice and Tim Brown are easily the most accomplished and recognizable players in the Oakland Raiders training camp. But converted quarterback Ronald Curry has been the man making the biggest plays through the first week of practice.

"I'm really pleased with Ronald Curry," said Oakland head coach Bill Callahan. "He's done a remarkable job and he continues to impress. He is having a very good camp right now."

A seventh-round draft pick last year who spent all but one game on the Raiders' practice squad, Curry was a quarterback at North Carolina and practiced at three different positions during his rookie year. Now he seems to have found a home at wide receiver.

It's a far cry from Curry's experience last year.

It's catch as catch can for Curry

Since joining the Raiders a year ago, Ronald Curry has been a quarterback, a kick returner, a safety and a punter. And now where do you find him?

"We're trying him at wide receiver," coach Bill Callahan said of the seventh-round draft choice. "I am really pleased with Ronald, where he's come from, how he's handled the mental strain and stress that it takes to go from quarterback to the physicality of playing wide receiver.

"The remarkable thing about Ronald Curry is that here's a guy who has been a great athlete his whole life at different positions, and now he has to play wide receiver. He has welcomed that move. He has continued to get better. He has an excellent understanding of the offense. . . . He has been extremely impressive in his ability to catch the ball in flight, and make a lot of oddball catches."
