Here is the contract for RB Larry Johnson, Penn State (No. 27 overall):

Signing bonus: $3,310,000.

Base salaries:
$452,000 (2003)
$515,000 (2004, plus $50,000 workout bonus)
$628,000 (2005, plus $50,000 workout bonus)
$741,000 (2006, plus $50,000 workout bonus)
$854,000 (2007, plus $50,000 workout bonus)
$967,000 (2008, voidable, plus $50,000 workout bonus)
$1,080,000 (2009, voidable, plus $50,000 workout bonus).

Total: seven years, $8,847,000 or five years, $6,700,000.

Would you give this to McGahee?

I wouldn't give that much up front.

His cap number for 2003 cannot exceed $1.018 million because that's all that's remaining in the rookie pool allocation.

I foresee only a 6 yr deal. Voidable to 5 yrs... Why? McGahee is only 21 y/o and will want the chance at UFA sooner.

I would give him $4 million signing bonus in total split over 2 seasons. $2 million in 2003 and $2 million option payment in 2004. Because he's likely NOT to play in 2003, he will be placed on PUP and then IR come week 10. His salary for 2003 is basically guaranteed. Throw in a "In Buffalo workout bonus(es)" and you have my "final proposal"

salaries: $550,000(2003), $550,000(2004), $600,000(2005), $675,000(2006), $800,000(2007), and $1 million(2008-voidable)

"In Buffalo" workout bonus in 2003 $125,000
2004-2008: $50,000

6 yrs-$8.55 million or 5 yrs-$7.5 million

2003 cap number: $1.008 million

Im not much of a cap person but it doess offer him a long term contract with good pay but I doubt that they agree for any less than a mill after year 3. but like I said I dont know the cap that well.

no way...he is going to lose a year rehabbing...possibly more...7 yrs. is a must.

You're not gonna get 7 yrs without voidable yrs.......

voidable in 6 and 7 is ok with me.

BUT.......Larry Johnson got voidable after 5 yrs. McGahee will likely get UFA after 5 yrs but he will need to meet higher standards to void the 6th year......it's all a trade off

Looks good to me. I didn't think he'd be that cheap. I guess at 23rd that's all you get, eh. I was thinkin' that b/c the notion is that he was a top few pick, that he'd want more starting next season.

Why, have you guys heard anything about this?

Whatever happens, as long as we can cut him should his health/injuries not hold out w/o incurring some huge cap hits, I think it would be good.

IMO the more difficult decision will be not the contract, but how to manage the Henry/McG situation. We'll have two high round picks both seemingly capable and desirous of starting. It's gonna be a neat trick to keep them both happy IMO. They're both saying "they're willing to wait", but just wait until Henry performs again and McGahee gets on the field next season. Only an injury to one or the other will ease the decision making process on this one.

Good luck TD!

i think that larry johnsons contract would be fine with the exception that i would make it a two tiered bonus. if he doesnt like it let him sit out and try to go in the draft next year.

i really think the nfl should make a conscious effort to get rid of rosenhaus. he is the scum of the earth.
