    Frerotte gives Culpepper a mentor

    MANKATO, Minn. — When quarterback Neil O'Donnell walked into Mike Tice's office this winter, the coach had Bruce Springsteen tunes bouncing off the walls to impress O'Donnell, who like Springsteen is a New Jersey native.

    Flattered, O'Donnell joked this summer he thought he was being recruited by the University of Minnesota, not the Vikings. When O'Donnell dragged his feet, the Vikings had a brief flirtation with Jeff George, who starred for the team in 1999.

    Neither high-profile courtship worked out. When talks with O'Donnell and George (and Shane Matthews in between) fell apart, the Vikings turned to journeyman Gus Frerotte to become their No. 2 quarterback.
