Lions aren't close to getting Wilkinson

ALLEN PARK -- The chance that Dan "Big Daddy" Wilkinson will become a Lion has grown slimmer.

Negotiations between the Lions and Brig Owens, the agent for the nine-year defensive tackle, have failed to produce a contract. Wilkinson's asking price apparently is more than the Lions are willing to pay.

"He's going to explore his options," Lions President Matt Millen said Wednesday.

Wilkinson visited the Lions on Sunday and Monday. He was released by the Washington Redskins last week when he refused to accept the team's terms for restructuring his contract.

Previously, Millen indicated that the Lions did not want to pay much more than $1 million in guaranteed salary for 2003.
