CHENEY -- Tom Lovat never goes into anything unprepared.
What else would you expect from someone who has spent the past 23 years coaching offensive linemen in the NFL?
As he continually tells his players -- preparation is everything.
That's why Lovat has planned for several years that his 24th NFL season will be his last.
"We've been setting this up, and we could have done it a couple of years ago," Lovat said yesterday during the lunch break at Seahawks training camp at Eastern Washington University -- the "we" referring to his wife, Lyn.
"But I still had the passion to go," added Lovat, who will be 65 in December. "I still do. ... I just want to go out when I want to go out."
Lovat wants to walk away while he's still in good health, especially after watching close friends and fellow assistant coaches Fritz Shurmur and Bobb McKittrick die in recent years before they got the chance to smell the non-football roses.
