The routine became a ritual for Shawn Springs last season, even as early as training camp. Springs would practice for a few days, then have to rest to avoid aggravating a severe hamstring injury from the 2001 season.

Then, in Week 3 of 2002 at New York, Springs sprained his left foot and missed the next game. Hobbled for most of the season, he still started and played in 15 games.

But this year is different. The seventh-year cornerback is in the final year of his original contract, and he looks to be completely healthy at last. That said, this season will be an important one for Springs' football future.

"It's always fun for me, because if it wasn't fun for me, I'd probably quit," he said of the sport. "I don't need it. I can go home and play video games with my kids or something.
