    DETROIT--You made it. Congratulations. You made it through the Kobe Bryant shock and the Sergei Fedorov angst and the Tigers' ungodly stench, and you've finally arrived at the perfect confluence of unpredictability and meaningful sweat.

    It's football season. Well, close enough.

    Practice began at Michigan and Michigan State on Wednesday. The Lions have been dripping globs of new enthusiasm for weeks. Nothing in sports today compares to the astonishing power of football, which has evolved into the quintessential American endeavor.

    Even the forlorn fan sitting in Comerica Park, meticulously charting every A.J. Hinch at-bat, has surrendered. Sure, baseball is America's pastime. Football is America's obsession.
