For a team eager to write off last year as an aberration, the St. Louis Rams scarcely could have gotten their preseason off to a more miserable beginning Friday night.

Quarterback Kurt Warner directed nine plays on offense. On three of them, he passed or attempted to pass using a seven-step drop. On each of those three plays, the result was awful, bringing back memories of a lost 2002 season.

It was not supposed to be this way.

For the past couple of weeks, all the talk from the Rams' training camp was upbeat. Warner was healthy, sharp and confident. St. Louis supposedly was ready to play offense again the way it did from 1999 through 2001, when it averaged more than 31 points and 400 yards a game over three seasons.
