Nutten Retires, Smith on the Offensive

Aside from a five-day stopover in Tokyo, the Jets' training camp had gone so smoothly that a disruption was bound to hit eventually. It did Thursday, with potentially severe repercussions.

Tom Nutten, the 32-year-old free agent who was signed to replace Randy Thomas on the offensive line, abruptly retired three weeks into an injury-plagued camp in which he was challenged by a player who hasn't played a regular-season snap in three years.

Brent Smith, the converted tackle who's been doing a respectable job at right guard while Nutten was injured, is now the starter at that position. Thus ended the Jets' placid, worry-free camp. Their hopes of going into the season with a cohesive offensive line might be gone, too.

CHAD STICKS UP FOR THE OFFENSE

The Jets' afternoon practice yesterday ended with some feistiness, drawing Chad Pennington into the fray to show his leadership ability.

In the final drill, the first-team defense was getting pretty physical with the backup offense in a goal-line exercise to the point Pennington angrily asked Herman Edwards to call an end to practice.

Edwards ordered the team to take one more rep before huddling them together.

In the huddle, not only did Edwards speak, but so did Pennington and SS Sam Garnes, one of the players who put a particularly hard lick on a backup.

Pennington downplayed the incident afterward, saying, "It's a team thing. I just want to make sure we're all in this together, not pitted against each other."

Edwards was energized by the goings on, saying, "That's good. It's a good thing. It's good that guys are feisty. That's what you want on your football team, guys protecting each other. It's good for the team."

At Jet Camp, Candlelight and Cots

It was a bizarre day from beginning to end at Jets camp Thursday, capped with the old standard team bonding experience -- showering by candlelight and camping out in the Hofstra gymnasium.

With power out all over the East Coast, the Jets had no lights and no air conditioning in their building or in the team dorm. University officials wouldn't let the players sleep in the dorm because it was a fire hazard, so they spent the night on cots in the Hofstra gym.

"Hey, a lot of us grew up in the neighborhood. We're used to taking showers in the dark," Coach Herman Edwards told the players. "They were fine. They went in there and took a shower. No big deal."

But in the special-teams meeting in the parking lot at 7:15 p.m., Edwards sprung a real shocker on the players: As of Thursday night, two-a-days were over. Edwards was already contemplating cutting the two-a-day schedule short and pulled the trigger on the decision Thursday night.

EAST RUTHERFORD - Jets' fans who came out to see their team's developing roster probably went away disappointed Saturday night.

Curtis Martin finally touched the ball, five times, in fact. But their featured running back didn't even play the entire 13-play opening drive before retiring for the night.

Once the game began, backup quarterback Vinny Testaverde never put on his helmet....
