NAPA - Raiders rookie cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, limited since injuring his right shoulder July 26 in a non-contact drill, returned to full practice Sunday.

The result: a few much-needed repetitions, a little bit of soreness and a whole lot of relief at being back on the field.

``To be doing some competitive work, it felt pretty good,'' said Asomugha, a former Cal player whom the Raiders picked in the first round of the April draft. ``Just getting the reps and starting to see the plays again was the main thing.''

The Raiders hope Asomugha can play Thursday against the 49ers. The team will have a full-contact workout this morning -- Sunday's practice was in shorts -- and that will go a long way toward determining Asomugha's readiness, Coach Bill Callahan said.

``He looked like a normal guy who hasn't had much contact,'' Callahan said. ``But his footwork, his change of direction, his ability to plant and cut to the ball were pretty good.''

Asomugha was in uniform for the Raiders' exhibition Friday against St. Louis. That whetted his appetite.
