Duce Staley's wallet won't be hit any harder tonight than it has been already.
According to an NFL source, the Eagles running back will be fined only an additional $5,000 for missing the team's preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints at the Superdome. As of yesterday, Staley's fine total was at $70,000 for missing 14 days of training camp.
Staley, scheduled to make $2.2 million this season, probably has no choice but to return to the Eagles. A league source said his contract rights would remain with the team next season if he held out the entire 2003 season.
Running back Barry Sanders was in the same situation when he decided to retire in 1999 rather than continue to play for the Detroit Lions. It's highly unlikely that Staley, 28, will take that path. The Staley camp has been quiet the last few days after stating its reasons for the running back's unhappiness last week.
