The idea lay somewhere in the recesses of his mind, because Friday night Mike Tice dreamed the Vikings would open the preseason with a long touchdown pass to Randy Moss. So as they prepared for the first possession Saturday against Jacksonville, Tice told offensive coordinator Scott Linehan to run a play that would send Moss on a deep post pattern.

Although Daunte Culpepper overthrew Moss, and the Vikings went three-and-out on their first series of a 16-14 loss, the intent carried significant symbolic meaning.

In their second season under Tice, the Vikings have elevated their expectations. While discussion has centered around an upgraded defense, those aspirations are evident on offense as well. The NFL's top rushing team in 2002, the Vikings hope to enhance their quick-strike potential this season.
