HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) -- Southern Mississippi's prodigal tailback has returned.
Timmy Blackwell is back after being dismissed from the team in the spring of 2002 by coach Jeff Bower for being a discipline problem.
"I realized this is what I wanted to do. This is my calling -- to play football," Blackwell said Sunday during Golden Eagles media day.
Blackwell was moved from wide receiver to tailback before his sophomore season in 2000 and eventually moved into the starting lineup. He showed some flashes of ability at his new position. He scored three touchdowns in his first career start and gained 97 yards on 24 carries in his second.
