DT Larry Smith spent most of his first five seasons in Jacksonville as a permanent resident of former coach Tom Coughlin's doghouse because of a variety of issues, among them a bad attitude.

Apparently, the problems have continued into the new regime. Smith was escorted off the practice field midway through Tuesday's morning practice and did not return.

After practice, Coach Jack Del Rio accounted for the incident rather cryptically, saying only "Larry Smith is not doing things the way we want them done."

Tardy DT Smith draws fine

Already criticized for being out of shape, Jaguars defensive tackle Larry Smith got into further trouble with coach Jack Del Rio yesterday by arriving 30 minutes late to the morning practice.

Smith, a former second-round draft pick from Florida State, nearly saw his checkered Jaguars career end because of the latest infraction. An irate Del Rio considered releasing the fifth-year pro before deciding yesterday afternoon to fine him for the tardiness.
