NAPA, Calif. - Notes from wine country ...

Troy Aikman, doing the TV thing at the Raiders' camp, has three words of advice for Jake Plummer: No more excuses.

"The people who supported him in Arizona would say he didn't have a real good supporting cast, that he was in a town that hadn't really grown accustomed to winning," said Aikman, who faced Plummer twice a year during his career. "All that's different now. I don't know how he'll do, but I think whatever he is as a quarterback will come out while he's in Denver. He's going to have good players around him and a great coach in Mike Shanahan, who's going to give him every chance. I don't know that you come away from that with a lot of excuses if you don't play well." ...

Sorry, it's too early for Plummer mania

The jury is friendly, too friendly, after just an opening shrug from Jake Plummer, Broncos quarterback and regime savior. This is not Plummer's fault, any more than it was Brian Griese's that he was not more than he is.

Still, I can recall being roundly hooted down for my first impression of Griese, which contained a comparison with a librarian, and goodness knows I meant no offense to either librarians or video clerks.

I will take this opportunity to apologize to both, as well as to crossing guards, spinsters, panhandlers, seamstresses, sock darners, ushers, space aliens, doorknobs, barnyard fowl, drive-up bank tellers and anyone in the witness protection program I may have offended in trying to characterize Griese during his time in Denver.
