Staley gets leg up on job

ALLEN PARK -- Luke Staley is 12 months and 30 yards closer to winning a job at running back with the Lions than he was when his season ended a year ago because of a knee injury.

Staley, who gained his 30 yards on seven carries in Saturday's 26-13 exhibition victory over Pittsburgh, has gotten some satisfaction from giving himself a chance to win a job.

The Pittsburgh game was a start for Staley. The next three games, beginning Saturday night at Cincinnati, will determine who wins roster spots as the backup to starting tailback James Stewart.

"It felt good just to get out there after a year and a half and play football again," Staley said Tuesday.

Staley's football career has been interrupted by frequent injuries. He injured a knee running sprints after practice last year. The surgery was his ninth, and the third on his knees. The previous eight were at Brigham Young.

Staley replaced Stewart on the first series of the second half. He didn't have to wait long for his first test. He carried on the first play, gaining 7 yards.

The Lions drove 78 yards in 16 plays for a touchdown, and Staley played a big part in the drive. He carried five times for 29 yards and caught a pass for a 5-yard gain.

Staley looked smooth and comfortable. It did not look like his first game since 2001, his last year at Brigham Young.
