Derrick Alexander, we hardly knew ye.
The veteran wide receiver, whom the Vikings signed last year to start opposite Randy Moss, was released Tuesday after it became clear that he had neither healed fully from knee surgery nor risen on the team's depth chart since training camp began.
Alexander caught two passes in Saturday's preseason opener against Jacksonville, but was behind at least seven other receivers competing for a roster spot.
"If you're going to cut a veteran," coach Mike Tice said, "I just think you should show him respect and do it early. That way he has time to latch on to another team that might need him. It's pretty obvious we're leaning toward going young with our wide receivers."
The Vikings are planning to use second-year receiver Kelly Campbell and rookie Nate Burleson behind starters Moss and D'Wayne Bates. Second-year player Kenny Clark and rookies Keenan Howry and Ben Nelson were all ahead of Alexander on the depth chart.
