ALBANY - The Giants need not worry that William Joseph's mouth will get him into trouble the way Jeremy Shockey's has during his first two seasons in New York.
Joseph doesn't have the same penchant for talking that Shockey has.

But the Giants hope that Joseph, their first-round draft pick, has the kind of impact on the field that Shockey has had since being taken in the first round a year ago.

Joseph will take his first crack at showing he can do that in the Giants' preseason game against the Panthers on Friday night at Giants Stadium. It will be Joseph's first game action in the NFL.

The defensive lineman from Miami missed last week's preseason opener at New England after holding out of camp for nearly two weeks.

Top pick gearing up for debut

William Joseph was quick as a cat, making would-be blockers look like chairs - which they were.

The rookie defensive tackle did not play in the Giants' opening exhibition game against New England on Thursday night. But prior to it, defensive line coach Denny Marcin had the late-signing No. 1 draft pick practicing his techniques in the meeting room at the team's hotel. Since the rest of the defensive linemen had been dismissed following their regular meeting, Marcin used chairs to represent the blockers.

"William looked good, but the chairs weren't moving too well," Marcin reported.

The romp through the chairs was pretty much the final installment of getting Joseph up to snuff.

"He's starting to get some was things mixed up," said Marcin, indicating that was normal for a player on a cram course. "Now we want to see him in the fray."
