Bruins sign Mitchell Miller.

You may remember him being drafted by the coyotes, and the yotes denouncing the pick after it came to light he bullied a black, disabled fellow student for years, including repeated use of horrific racial slurs.

The outcry was so bad, the bruins reneged the pick, especially after the NHL said he will probably never be eligible to play in the league.

JT Miller signs a big contract and gets lazy and brings the lame.

These two videos are telling about how Miller has done recently in Vancouver. The Canucks wishing they signed Horvat and not Miller, I'm guessing:

Why

swiper
01-07-2023, 07:46 AM
Well that he cleared waivers means word is out on him w/in NHL inner circles.

Someone may be interested in trading for Jakub Vrana

Colton David of Daily Faceoff: Frank Seravalli and Steven Ellis on Daily Faceoff Live on if Detroit Red Wings forward Jakub Vrana will get trade interest after he cleared waivers.

Seravalli notes that there were a lot of people surprised that Vrana didn’t get claimed off waivers.

Ellis adds that you have to wonder what the relationship is between the Wings and Vrana now. Is there something else going on behind the scenes? He’s been through the players assistance program. Will they give him another shot as he was an important player for them before?

Seravalli’s adds that teams are intrigued and spoke to one team who internally talked about trading for him.

“The suggestion I made was, it sort of feels like that relationship is indeed broken; why not offer up a deal that involves Detroit retaining $1.8 or $1.9 million or whatever the number is that equates to a buyout for Vrana?

Maybe that’s something that would be palatable for Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings if they could get something back in return for him. So for that team you don’t take Vrana on at full price, you get him for a bit of a discount on the cap and a player that can contribute in a big way if you treat him the right when it comes to Stanley Cup playoff time. ”

If Yzerman wants to part ways with a "good" player, there must be more to the story. The Sabres have spent a lot of time creating a locker room culture from within. I don't think they will risk spoiling it by taking such a chance on an outside player such as this. I just don't see it happening. Although, it will be interesting to see where he lands. Don't the Islanders still need scoring (LINK (https://nhlrumors.com/nhl-rumors-who-knows-what-the-islanders-are-thinking-and-will-the-panthers-hit-sell-mode/2023/01/06/))?

He cleared waivers.

The thought was there was a gentleman's agreement that no team would claim Vrana, as it was believed he needed more time in the AHL.

That, and with his recovery, the league decided no one would claim. That's the story

Media, for sure. I think the thought was someone who just went through the assistance program shouldn't be claimed when their life is in settling chaos, if that makes sense.

That said, I think him coming into the lockerroom like the sabres would have been great for him. It's such a great locker room

Looks like Las Vegas unloaded the right contract when they traded Max Pacioretty to the Carolina Hurricanes. Pacioretty collapsed in a game with a non-contact injury. A Damar Hamlin-type of collapse (although he didn't lose consciousness). Turns out it is the 2nd time he ruptured his achilles tendon. Carolina trying to put pressure on the Boston Bruins and needed his scoring touch. Now rumors have them interested in Bo Horvat (https://nhlrumors.com/nhl-rumors-the-vancouver-canucks-bo-horvat-and-who-are-we-talking-about-here/2023/01/20/). Bruce Boudreau fired in Vancouver.

Rick Tocchet hiring announced.

Retreads abound.

swiper
01-22-2023, 12:29 PM
Boudreau was with his fourth NHL team after stints with Washington, Anaheim and Minnesota. He won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year in 2007-08 when he was elevated from the minors to coach the Capitals on Thanksgiving and got them to the playoffs.

Teams coached by Boudreau for a full season have made the playoffs nine out of 10 times. His .626 points percentage ranks fourth among coaches with at least 500 games behind the bench, and his 617 wins are tied for 20th in league history with Hall of Famer Jacques Lemaire.

But a Canucks team in disarray did not give him much of a chance to keep that success going. Rutherford in a news conference Monday said big changes would be coming in the offseason, citing the need for the team to get younger.

They could happen before that, especially with captain Bo Horvat unsigned beyond this season and attracting attention ahead of the March 3 trade deadline.

Tocchet is 178-200-60 as a head coach after leading the Tampa Bay Lightning for parts of two seasons from 2008 to 2010 and the Arizona Coyotes for four years from 2017 to 2021. He won the Stanley Cup as a player with the Pittsburgh Penguins and then twice as an assistant for them.

Blue Jackets shopping Jonathan Quick. Upgrade for Sabres?

Blue Jackets will try to quickly explore the market before Friday's deadline to see if there's interest on a playoff team for pending UFA Jonathan Quick. Which has has been communicated to the veteran goalie, and well, no doubt would be a desirable outcome for him.
— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) March 1, 2023 (https://twitter.com/PierreVLeBrun/status/1630947813516353536?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) <script async="" src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I would stay away. There was a reason that Copley was playing instead of Quick. This isn't the cup winning Quick you would be getting.

Boston picks up Tyler Bertuzzi from Detroit-and the Red Wings get a 2024 1st and a 2025 5th; the pending UFA is likely little more than a rental player considering that Boston just extended Pastrnak.

An older goalie but has his moments and can get hot which is really all you need but the chances are low IMO. You have to wonder about a guy that couldn't stick with the Senators. The Wild also thought he was done. So that is one basement team and one contending team both saying bye. I would target goalie prospects on a team with a entrenched starter in a long term deal. Or you can throw the bank at Hellebuyck in a year and a half when the jets have to probably start shedding assets.

Still with Ottawa but looking to move him like you had said.

The Boston Bruins aren't ruling out a goalie change for Game 7 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series against the Florida Panthers.

In fact, Boston coach Jim Montgomery thought about pulling starter Linus Ullmark during Game 6 on Friday night, a 7-5 loss for the Bruins in which Ullmark gave up six goals on 32 shots. Now the Bruins face elimination when they clash with Florida for a final time Sunday -- and every player is under review.

Montgomery ultimately chose to stick with Ullmark in Game 6, but he didn't say whether Ullmark or backup Jeremy Swayman would get the call in Game 7.

Dubas is out as GM of the leafs. They won't offer him a contract

He did a good job there. Shanahan even said so. Wasn't his fault, the early bow out.

In a statement released by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Brendan Shanahan, President and Alternate Governor said:

“I would like to thank Kyle for his unwavering dedication over these last nine seasons with the organization, including his last five as General Manager. Kyle fostered a great culture within our dressing room and staff, and consistently pushed to make our team better season over season. We wish Kyle and his family the best moving forward and thank him for his valuable contributions.”

The Maple Leafs also announced that Shanahan will be holding a press cofnerence at 3 pm on Friday afternoon.

Dubas spent the last five seasons as the Maple Leafs general manager. The best result came this year when the Maple Leafs made it to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs before losing to the Florida Panthers in five games.

During that time he signed John Tavares, signed Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, and Morgan Reilly to new deals.

Had his best trade deadline as a general manager as he went all in acquiring Ryan O’Reilly, Noel Acciari, Jake McCabe, Sam Lafferty, Luke Schenn, and Erik Gustafsson.

But again, the Maple Leafs came up short.

Devils to begin contract talks with Meier this week, GM says (https://www.nhl.com/news/new-jersey-devils-timo-meier-to-begin-contract-talks-this-week/c-344762790)

BUFFALO -- The New Jersey Devils this week will begin serious discussions to lock up Timo Meier (https://www.nhl.com/player/timo-meier-8478414) long term, general manager Tom Fitzgerald said Tuesday.

Fitzgerald said the plan is to speak with Meier's agent, Claude Lemieux, in the coming days in an attempt to woo the forward into signing a multiyear pact. The 26-year-old becomes a restricted free agent July 1 and is one year away from unrestricted free agency, a scenario New Jersey would like to avoid.

"We would love nothing better to tie him up long term," Fitzgerald told NHL.com at the NHL Scouting Combine. "That's our goal. That's what Claude and I will go through.

"I want them to understand what New Jersey is, what the organization is, the living -- I think New Jersey is a diamond in the rough -- the travel, all the positive things. Give him a chance to settle in and go: 'OK, I hope you want to be here.' Those are some of the things we'll go through."

current team is the only one that can offer 8 years. A UFA can only sign 7. The sign and trade gets the new team the extra year and the old team gets a little sweetener to not lose the player for nothing.

This under the assumption the player or the team don't want to continue their relationship for whatever reason (cap, family, etc)

https://twitter.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/1667161155251367937?t=95XtV9tb4M2I3kDclLfS8Q&s=19

A big to-do over this signing. Like the Blue Jackets are the second coming. The main stream hockey media seems to love this. But Severson who? Here's the truth:

Vince Z. Mercogliano: “Nothing at all against Severson, who is a fine player, but I’m seeing multiple people refer to him as the top free agent available in this summer’s class…?

He was a bottom-pair guy in NJ and now he’s one of the 40 highest-paid D-men in the league. Am I missing something?”

Charlie O’Connor: “Here’s the thing with Columbus. While I am not at all convinced that they are ready to turn the corner into contention, they signed a 29-year old Johnny Gaudreau to a 7 year deal last summer & are going to hire Mike friggin Babcock. It’s not like this win-now philosophy is new.”

@domluszczyszyn: Columbus makes a big splash with Damon Severson, paying him like a top pair defenseman with eight years of term. He's an underrated player now, but he's now far from an underpaid one.

The NJ Devils don't tend to make poor trades. The Blue Jackets took a 3rd-line pairing guy and paid him as a top-pairing guy. He'll end up being a 2nd line defender. You don't look smart paying all that money to a player in that position.

Puck Pedia: salary breakdown.

2023-24: $6 million salary and a $2 million signing bonus
2024-25: $6 million salary and a $2 million signing bonus
2025-26: $5.5 million salary and a $2 million signing bonus
2026-27: $4.1 million salary and a $2 million signing bonus
2027-28: $3.3 million salary and a $1.8 million signing bonus
2028-29: $4.1 million salary and a $1 million signing bonus
2029-30: $5.1 million salary
2030-31: $5.1 million salary

He’ll have a no-trade clause for the first four years, a 20-team no-trade in year five, and a 12-team no-trade for the final three years of the contract.

Ask yourself how you'd feel if the Sabres threw that money and term at a 3rd-line defender, while giving up a 3rd round pick. It may work for Columbus, it may not and will tie up a lot of money for 5-6 years -and the no-trade clause for this type of player is just hilarious. They are stuck with him.

Sportsnet 590 The FAN: Elliotte Friedman on The Jeff Marek Show on the offseason ahead for the Winnipeg Jets.

Marek: “One team I want to throw in there quickly, I think we’re all expecting something big at some point. I don’t know which domino is going to be the first, but I mentioned the Winnipeg Jets a couple seconds ago.’

We all now and suspect what the moves are going to be and whose names are on the front burner here.

How quickly do you think (GM Kevin) Cheveldayoff gets to work now that it seems like, to be blunt, trade season is kind of on here?”

Friedman: “Really, honestly, I think it starts and ends with (Connor) Hellebuyck. I shouldn’t say ends with Hellebuyck. I think it starts with Hellebuyck because I think he’s the one you’re probably going to get the most return for.

As you and I have talked about, there’s a really interesting goalie market out there. I think there’s teams looking. And so, I think people are kind of talking about who’s the goalie we want to go after and what’s that going to look like. So, I think a lot of this starts with Hellebuyck.

I think Winnipeg’s big challenge with (Pierre-Luc) Dubois is going to be, can you convince other teams out there, that there’s a market for him beyond Montreal? I don’t think it’s only Montreal for Dubois but I think we all believe it is his vast preference is to end up there.

So if you’re Montreal and you think that’s the case, you’re not paying a ransom for him. I think the most interesting thing there is, I think there’s teams out there looking at this like, we’ve got one more year of a really tight cap. If we’re a good team and if we think he can help us for a year, let’s go for it.

NHL Rumors: Carter Hart – Flyers, Sharks and Canadiens

Like I know last year, there were teams that looked at Dubois and said, ‘Hey, if we only get him for two years, we’ll take it.’

But what’s that trade look like? I think that’s one of the biggest questions. “

Dubois has asked for trades twice in his career and he's not even in his mid 20s. Seems to me he's not exactly the type of teammate you'd want to be on your squad.

AND... he has said he only wants Montreal, which was stupid for him to do. Now Montreal will definitely not over-commit for him and this will scare off other teams. That GM has some work to do. Mark Scheifele is an ******* and locker room cancer (just ask Patrick Laine), Dubois is a shiny prima donna (as is Scheifele). They should jettison those two, IMO. But they have some good players to rebuild around: Morrissey, Connor, Ehlers... Niederreiter will turn out to be a solid addition. Not sure about Wheeler. I seem to remember Laine complaining about Scheifele & Wheeler in the locker room.

current team is the only one that can offer 8 years. A UFA can only sign 7. The sign and trade gets the new team the extra year and the old team gets a little sweetener to not lose the player for nothing.

This under the assumption the player or the team don't want to continue their relationship for whatever reason (cap, family, etc)

I thought a new team signed him then immediately traded him… thus the three team deal.

That is very true but being a 6'3" C is always going to be in demand. Rumors are he wants to be in Montreal.

No the 3rd team was to retain salary. Traded to that team, traded out with retained salary to the end team.

BIGGEST news in the NHL today is that the Vegas Golden Knights are on the cusp of winning the Stanley Cup TONIGHT!!!!

Quickest an expansion team has ever won the Stanley Cup....only their sixth year in the league..

The sad sack Buffalo Sabres are STILL waiting after FIFTY THREE YEARS!!!

My adopted hometown is ready to explode!!!! They are doing it with the help of Buffalo’s cast off, Jack Eichel. By all accounts a good trade for both teams. Hope the Sabres finally make it back to the playoffs and relevance next season.

Worse is the fact that the probable winner of the Conn Smythe trophy is going to be Jonathan Marchessault, who Florida stupidly left him exposed in the Vegas expansion draft. The Athletic has the full story....

Jonathan Marchessault’s postseason a reminder of Florida Panthers’ ‘Computer Boys’ era (https://theathletic.com/4602120/2023/06/12/jonathan-marchessault-florida-panthers-golden-knights/?source=pulsenewsletter&campaign=7021127)

Word is flat cap and a lot of so-so offerings in free agency. A lot of 30-something NHLers looking to continue their careers at a good salary. Looks like some will be out of luck. GMs deciding who still has gas left in the tank, who's worth paying north of $5 million on a short-term deal.

The Devils already ahead of the curve (Toffoli, Timo Meier). Will see if they get Hellebuyck. If so, they have to be a cup favorite for 2024. Watching the Maple Leafs. Bruins will take a step back this year. Who wouldn't after that last season? Jonathan Quick headed to NYC they say. A lot of shuffling of deck chairs looking for a good fit. Where are all those Patrick Kane to Buffalo rumors now?

Pesce & Mayfield not yet re-signed. Hmmmm.

Cap Friendly: DeBrincat signs a four-year contract with a salary cap hit of $7.875 million.

2023-24: $8.25 million
2024-25: $8.25 million (M-NTC)
2025-26: $8.25 million (M-NTC)
2026-27: $6.75 million (M-NTC)

He’ll have a 16-team trade list

Ian Mendes: Condition on the pick – The Red Wings have the option of sending their own 2024 first-round pick or the 2024 first-round pick they acquired from the Boston Bruins.

If the Bruins pick is in the top 10, the Bruins have the right to retain the pick and send the Red Wings their 2025 first-round pick, unprotected. The Red Wings would have the option to send the 2024 first-round or Boston’s 2025 first-round pick under that scenario.

J.D. Burke: “On the one hand, can’t really complain about what Detroit paid to bring DeBrincat into the fold, especially on that team friendly contract. On the other, feels like Ottawa got off easy given the shape of the market right now for DeBrincat-type players.”

Kristen Shilton: “This is everything Detroit needed. A team starved for high-end scorers lands exactly that. And DeBrincat should be pleased playing alongside Detroit’s other talents. Tidy work.”

Ian Mendes: “Getting a first-round pick and Dominik Kubalik for Alex DeBrincat is an okay return for Ottawa. Not a home run, but not a swing-and-a-miss IMO. The key for me: What does Ottawa do with the cap space now? If they add another significant piece, this could turn out okay.”

Sean Shapiro: “Unless the Senators have seen something I haven’t in Sebrango, it feels like Ottawa should have just taken him to arbitration and at least tried to get something at deadline. Nice work by Detroit”

Cam Robinson: “Overall, really solid value by DET nabbing DeBrincat. The cost to acquire is very palatable, and the 4-year extension seems to bake in his upside while acknowledging the limited two-way game and inconsistencies. I like it.”

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Arizona Coyotes placed newly signed free agent forward Alex Galchenyuk on unconditional waivers and plan to terminate his contract following his arrest on multiple charges over the weekend.

A Scottsdale Police Department spokesperson said Thursday that Galchenyuk was arrested Sunday on charges of private property hit and run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest, and threatening or intimidating. The spokesperson said the hit and run was only property damage and no injuries occurred.

Galchenyuk was booked into the Scottsdale city jail on misdemeanor charges and released the next day on his own recognizance.

“The Arizona Coyotes have placed forward Alex Galchenyuk on unconditional waivers for purposes of terminating his contract,” the team said in a statement Thursday. “The Club will have no further comment at this time.”

The NHL Players Association said it is reviewing the matter.

The Coyotes signed Galchenyuk to a one-year, $775,000 contract July 1, the opening of free agency, for his third stint with the team.

The 29-year-old had 19 goals and 22 assists with the Coyotes in 2018-19 and returned in 2021-22, finishing with six goals and 15 assists in 60 games.

Montreal selected Galchenyuk with the third overall pick of the 2012 NHL Draft and he played his first six seasons with the Canadiens, starting in 2012. He had 30 goals and 26 assists in 2015-16, but has been more of a journeyman the past few years, playing in Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Ottawa, Toronto and Colorado.

WGR suggests the K'Andre Miller bridge deal may be a model for Kevyn Adams to get Owen Power signed this summer.

Rangers give restricted free agent defenseman K’Andre Miller a 2-year extension (https://www.nbcsports.com/nhl/news/rangers-give-restricted-free-agent-defenseman-kandre-miller-a-2-year-extension)

Such a deal would allow Power to continue to develop his NHL game while paying him properly, then could sign a long-term deal after this shorter one.

Miller was the 22nd overall pick of the 2018 draft (sandwiched between the Sabres getting Dahlin & Samuelsson). He was a great pick (when he's not spitting on Drew Doughty (https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/35742698/rangers-kandre-miller-ejected-game-spitting-incident)) - see:

NEW YORK (AP) The New York Rangers have agreed to terms with restricted free agent defenseman K’Andre Miller on a two-year, $7.7 million contract extension.

General manager Chris Drury announced the deal on Tuesday that will keep the 23-year-old with the Rangers through the 2024-25 season. He has been a mainstay in the lineup since joining the team for the start of the 2020-21 season.

Miller established career-highs in goals (9), assists (34) and points (43) in 2022-23, ranking second among Blueshirts defensemen in all three categories. He also played a role on special teams, being on the ice for 149 minutes of shorthanded time.

The St. Paul, Minnesota, native has 21 goals and 54 assists in 214 career NHL games, all with New York, and has a career plus-44 rating. Since his rookie season in 2020-21, Miller ranks seventh among NHL defensemen in takeaways with 153.

Miller was drafted by New York with the 22nd overall pick in the 2018 draft. Among defensemen taken that year, he ranks first in plus/minus, third in ice time per game (21:14) and fourth in games played.

Galchenyuk cited connections in Moscow while saying "I'm gunna chop you, your wife, your daughter" and "One phone call and you're all dead, your whole family, your blood line is dead," police said in the report.

Galchenyuk, who was born in the U.S. to Belarusian parents, but spent much of his childhood in Russia, uttered a racial slur several times while referring to the officer in training, the report said.

However, this was a bargained and agreed to suspension so he obviously in the wrong according to the current policy. Maybe they change it or update it like football did.

No. He's severely in decline for whatever reason. He's having a TERRIBLE season and it's just gotten really bad for him. Even johnny hockey is having a terrible season.

I love hockey in spite of the people that run it. The latest example: Minnesota GK Marc-Andre Fleury, long considered one of the class acts in the league, decided to design a new mask in honor of Native American Heritage Night(his wife has indigenous ancestry). Here's the problem: The NHL has said he cannot wear that mask, even in warm-ups(which would have been for tonight's game against Colorado), and threatened to fine him if he does so. Fleury was prepared to pay that fine(per his agent, Allan Walsh), but the league threatened to fine the Wild an even larger amount. Fleury didn't want to put the team in a bind, so he autographed the mask and it's going to be auctioned off to benefit a couple of charities-one of them Native American.

There have been rumors over what exactly happened, and due to the nature of some of them I'm not repeating them. Having said that, it's good to see that the Hawks acted quickly in this case.

Kyle Connor to miss 6-8 weeks after a knee on knee hit from Strom of the Ducks. Strome got 5 min with no further suspension. Don't really like the 5 min for 8 weeks trade off but at least he should be back for the stretch run.

I've seen this episode before! After clawing their way out of the basement into a playoff spot, now is definitely the time to make it about yourself. I would think he needs the paychecks and should just shut up.

There was no way the Canucks were letting him go. He was trade in a lot of trade talk before the Vancouver in-season turnaround, but he's been the best guy on the team since then. He's part of their core now. So the extension was predicted and now done. Very good player. Would have loved to have him.

I should also note that-per TSN-there was a trade some weeks ago between Buffalo & Montreal which was more for AHL depth than anything else; Filip Cederqvist heads to Montreal(he'll likely be playing for the AHL's Laval Rocket)and Buffalo will get future considerations.

An interesting read about the Red Wings offseason. Depending on extensions, they're going to be in cap trouble. Since they are a team I expect Buffalo to compete with, it's worth a read in the lean off season months
