Everyone always talks about how fast he was and how we are going to miss his speed, but was he really that fast to begin with? He wasn't that big either at only 5'11 190 lbs so what made him so much better than Josh Reed? Reed is listed at 5'10 208 lbs. But back to the speed issue:

Peerless:

this website has him running a 4.65 40 time coming out of college

"While he lacks great deep speed, he has outstanding quickness and an excellent short area burst, which gives him separation and the ability to avoid the bump. "

that website has him running a 4.65 as well.

this website has him running a 4.56 in the 40 yd dash

Josh Reed:

CNN has him running a 4.49

NFL.com has him running a 4.52

website has Reed running a 4.5

Did Peerless improve his speed after he reached the NFL? and if so, can josh do the same? Neither of them on paper appear to be a flat out burner, although peerless has the reputation as one. In fact, Reed on paper should be the better receiver with his route running skills and tackle breaking ability. What was it that made peerless so good?

I've looked into this myself once before, everywhere I've researched I found that Reed was faster out of college. I am wondering the same thing, I think Price has a good burst and acceleration to get open down field, but I don't know if he is really as much of a speed receiver people made him out to be. Look at the numbers for Reed last year too, even though he was the third receiver and no recievers ahead of him on the depth chart were hurt, his numbers were still as high as many 2nd receivers on other teams. I think the way our offense is designed, almost any reciever can look good, so I think Atlanta overpayed for Price and he was not as essential as everyone makes him out to be.

He only needs to be fast enough to reach MICHAEL VICKS throws!

I definitly think reed can improve on his speed but his specialty right now is to go over the middle so the speed he has now is enough

The speed I remember being reported for Peerless was 4.37. A lot was made of the fact that Shawn Bryson was faster, though that was splitting hairs. Bryson was listed at 4.36 I think. There are certainly faster guys in the NFL. Antonio Brown would make him look like he was standing still. Yet 4.37 will let him run away from a good percentage of the CBs in the NFL.

All I remember about Peerless's speed was the Miami game, when he caught a hook pattern and from a standing stop turned around and burned every Dolphin defender untouched into the endzone. I couldn't believe he did that.
Everyone used to say Jerry Rice had a slow 40 time, but no one caught him. How about Andre Reed, how many people caught him?
I think it all depends on how fast they can run after being on the field for a couple series or throughout the game, not how fast they can run a 40 rested just one time.

One looks fast when the defenders are standing still.

I totally agree w/ you Alluro and have never believed all that rubbish. It may be slightly true, but we've all watched Reed and I simply don't think he's significantly slower either. Again, say something often enough and pretty soon everyone believes it.

I read i think it was Sports Illustrated about how the 40 time is so overrated and really doesnt mean much. Someone can run a 4.4 and still not be able to get open. Look at Jerry Rice, he never had a great 40 time but he was quick and was able to get open

im a serious high school football player and if its one thing ive learned at this level atleast, its that your 40 time doesnt reflect at all how good of a deep threat you are. same with corners...you run a 5.2 forty but if you have flawless technique, you can cover anyone. speed does mean something, but in the long run it doesnt matter how fast you run the forty or how much you bench press, football is played on the field, not in the weigh room or track

in the pros everyone has flawless technique, the difference between a superstar and camp fodder is often natural talent and prepration.
