ATLANTA -- Atlanta Falcons star Michael Vick fractured his right fibula Saturday night during an exhibition game against Baltimore.

Vick is likely to be out at least six weeks with his fractured fibula, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports according to his sources. He will be re-evaluated on Sunday, but caoch Dan Reeves believes surgery won't be necessary.

"He's got a broken bone in his leg," Reeves said. "The are saying he could be out six weeks but they don't think he will have surgery. We will have to see. "

If Vick's out six weeks, he'll miss the first four games of the regular season, and would return Oct. 5 against Minnesota.

"I'm totally disappointed. But this is the ultimate team sport and we will have to keep playing. I have confidence that these guys and coaches can get it done," Vick said.

Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb had a similar injury last year and was out two months.

Vick was chased out of the pocket on a third-down play late in the first quarter and was tackled by Adalius Thomas. Vick fell awkwardly on his right leg and grabbed it even before he hit the ground.

Reeves: Surgery unlikely for Falcons star Vick

Atlanta Falcons star Michael Vick fractured his right fibula Saturday night during an exhibition game against Baltimore, and team owner Arthur Blank said the quarterback will be sidelined at least six weeks.

Blank said Vick wouldn't have surgery. If he's out six weeks, he'll miss the first four games of the regular season, and would return Oct. 5 against Minnesota.

"We are just going to have to wait and see,'' Atlanta coach Dan Reeves said. "It's a tough break for us.''

Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb had a similar injury last year and was out two months.

Falcons Team Doctor Andrew Bishop said Sunday that Mike Vick's fractured fibula injury was externally rotational in nature, and did not involve any rolling of the ankle joint. He believes there was minimal ligment damage, but the next 10-14 days will be critical. He will monitor Mike's progress over the next 10-14 days by taking X-rays. If the X-rays show two of the bones in Mike's right ankle migrating laterally, then that indicates the ligaments have been damaged to the point where they cannot hold the fibula in the proper position to promote perfect healing. If this is the case, then further measures, such as screws, etc. would need to be taken to promote healing. Right now, Mike's bones are in perfect position for normal healing....

The morons at Redskin hell didn't even announce this on Saturday night! They were too busy praising Rob Johnson for being a better quarterback than the Pats secondary! And jumping for joy every time the Skins got a first down!:rolleyes: I happened to be inside when the news of Vick's injury was announced on television. Vicks injury was the buzz in the stadium not the game, for obvious reasons.

I hope he heals too. What a shame to not only lose a starter in preseason, but your starting quarterback. That's rough!

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) -- Michael Vick hobbled into the crowded room Tuesday -- a crutch under each arm, a black cast on his right leg.

Sitting down required some tedious maneuvering. A helping hand was needed to prop up his broken leg.

For now, the NFL's most dazzling player couldn't outrun a sumo wrestler.
Michael Vick says he will let the healing process take its course.

"Oh man, it's tough," Vick said in his first public comments since Saturday night, when the Atlanta Falcons quarterback broke his fibula in a preseason game. "I tried to take a shower and it was just something that I couldn't do. It's something that I'm going to have to get used to for the next few weeks. I'm going to need help."...

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) -- Michael Vick received a good report after Atlanta Falcons orthopedist Andrew Bishop looked at X-rays of the quarterback's broken right leg.

"Everything is the same with Mike," team spokesman Aaron Salkin said Thursday. "Nothing has changed, which is good news."

Bishop indicated earlier this week that Vick likely would avoid surgery if the ligaments surrounding his ankle hold the fibula, tibia and talus in place. Bishop described the fracture as "a clean break," which gave the Falcons hope that Vick might return as early as Oct. 5 against Minnesota....

When Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick broke the fibula in his right leg last week, it was speculated he would miss six weeks and make his return during the season's fifth game.

Team doctor Andrew Bishop said the recovery could take longer, however. In addition to the break, Vick sustained ligament damage, although the team is not sure how much.

''We think it is minimal because the break is very clean, it is not displaced at all, and the bones are perfectly lined up,'' Bishop said. ``If there was substantial ligament damage . . . that would require surgical intervention. We don't know for certain -- no MRI or test will tell you -- how much damage there is [in the ligaments].''...

He's still waiting.



Atlanta Falcons orthopedist Andrew Bishop has told Vick, the team's star quarterback, that X-rays show a nearly healed fracture in his lower right leg. Vick broke his fibula in a preseason game Aug. 16.

"Yeah, the bone's healing, but there's still pain in my foot," Vick said Wednesday. "Once I'm able to overcome that, I'll be able to walk without these crutches and without this boot."...

Michael Vick watched from the sideline, but it's highly doubtful the injured Atlanta quarterback would have made much of a difference against a Tampa Bay defense that wasn't going to let this one get away.

On the other hand, he couldn't have looked any worse. Johnson was hesitant and unsure of what the defense was doing, often double- and triple-pumping before releasing the ball. The result was three ugly interceptions — two thrown right to Smith, the other to John Lynch.

Michael Vick saw Doug Johnson standing alone on the sideline as the Atlanta Falcons unraveled against Tampa Bay.
The injured superstar quarterback knew there was nothing he could say to console Johnson, a fourth-year backup who’s trying to fill a huge void.
‘‘It’s like you get to a point where you’re dealing with a situation that only you can control,’’ Vick said. ‘‘Nobody else can go out there and do the job but you, so it’s all on you. You don’t want to hear everybody saying, ‘Do this, do that and don’t worry about it,’ because you’re kind of in a state of mind where you have to work yourself through that.
‘‘It’s tough. The only thing I tried to tell him was to just keep going out there and try to make some positive plays. That’s it.’’

The Atlanta Falcons started 1-3 a year ago and still made the playoffs. That hardly seems likely this season _ especially with Michael Vick probably out two more games.

The Falcons haven't won since their opener against Dallas, and in consecutive losses to division rivals Tampa Bay and Carolina, they've scored only one touchdown.

More than 80 years have passed and Boston still blames a "the curse of the Bambino" for the multiple failures of the Red Sox -- the trade of Babe Ruth to the Yankees.

The Falcons have developed a curse of their own, self-imposed, concealed beneath their pads, but a curse nevertheless. Not of a player traded away, long since passed away, but of one still very much present and straining at his leash -- "the curse of the absent Vick."

Michael Vick, the quarterback, is injured, has missed four games, and may miss as many as three more. One sweet defeat of Dallas, then three dismal games and a complete unraveling of a team for which this was to be "the year."

The way things are going, the Atlanta Falcons could be done by the time their star quarterback gets back on the field.
