You are right. The results (win or loss) are meaningless. But you want to see some semblance of execution - which there was none from the first units. That is NOT meaningless.

Remember the super bowl years, lost a lot preseason games right? right! Well not exactly.
The difference is the starters on the SB teams came out efficient and effective, barley saw a whole quarter of ball. In came the 2cnd string often against the opponents 1st, quickly followed by the scrubs, this is why we lost so many preseason games. This is not the case with either our 1st string O or D, and while not enough to cause panic it should raise an eyebrow or two.
As far as “vanilla plays” being run, well those are plays we should plain execute on, and were not. I can understand penalties in the first game but they should be lowering in occurrence, they did not.
