    Holcomb named starter over couch

Kelly Holcomb will begin the season as the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback after beating out Tim Couch for the job, coach Butch Davis announced Sunday.

Good move. I was at the scrimmage and Holcomb was clearly better.

Yeah...........my cousin is a big Browns fan and he say's Holcomb has been far and away the better QB in camp. Sometimes money talks though. They are probably going to have to move Couch next year if Holcomb does well but who is gonna take him with that salary.

I talked to a few Browns fans while I was there and the only one who thought Couch should start was a guy who mentioned money as the reason. He felt you couldn't bench someone who made that much.

Couch says his role as a backup is only temporary

Quarterback Tim Couch, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1999 draft, said yesterday he'll be a starter again - whether it's here or somewhere else.

"This is definitely not the end for me," he said. "This is just a minor setback. I don't see myself as a backup quarterback. I'm never going to accept that role fully. I'll accept it fully this year, but I'm going to be a starter in this league and I'm going to play well, so this is just minor for me."

He admitted that "it's a tough day for me, but it's not the end of the world. I'm still a very young player in this league and I've got a long career ahead of me. . . . I'm going to overcome this and be all right."

Browns move on after QB decision

BEREA, Ohio -- One day after Kelly Holcomb was picked over Tim Couch to be the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback, their teammates got to weigh in on the decision Monday.

While most offered the standard whatever-coach-wants-to-do responses, Quincy Morgan had trouble hiding his feelings.

He was smiling. It was obvious that the wide receiver would have picked Holcomb, too.

                He knew it all along

BEREA, Ohio--The reporters covering the Cleveland Browns were told that the Browns' starting quarterback was ready and waiting to be interviewed.

Until a few days ago when coach Butch Davis picked him over Tim Couch as the starter, Kelly Holcomb was always waiting.

Perseverance paid off. The spotlight didn't find him. He stole it.

Playing at Middle Tennessee State is no longer a factor. Going undrafted doesn't matter anymore. Being waived four times by Tampa Bay then stuck behind Peyton Manning in Indianapolis is not relevant now.

Building on the momentum of the recent Cleveland Browns announcement that Kelly Holcomb will be the starting quarterback for the upcoming season, Cleveland resident Bert Dobies today announced the creation and availability of a new "HOLCOMB MANIAC" T-shirt.

Browns Couch QB decision: Holcomb out

BEREA, Ohio -- Tim Couch will start at quarterback for Cleveland on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, replacing the injured Kelly Holcomb.

"It's exciting," Couch said after practice Thursday. "I'm looking forward to a chance to get back out there and play again. Hopefully, everything goes well and we get a victory."

Browns coach Butch Davis announced the switch Thursday during his weekly Internet show on the team's Web site.

                        Slow healer?

Holcomb's return could take longer than initially hoped
BEREA, Ohio (AP) -- It could take longer than originally anticipated for Cleveland Browns quarterback Kelly Holcomb to return from a leg injury.

"It takes about four to six weeks to heal," Holcomb said Thursday of the hairline fracture of his right fibula.

Holcomb could be out until after the Browns bye week, meaning he would be ready for the Nov. 9 game at Kansas City.

Couch holds on as Browns' starter for now

CLEVELAND -- At some point this season, Cleveland Browns coach Butch Davis may have to decide again between Tim Couch and Kelly Holcomb as his starting quarterback, a call he was first forced to make in training camp.

But that point won't arrive this week as, by equal parts default and deed, Couch will retain the top spot on the depth chart for at least one more contest, when the Browns host the winless San Diego Chargers on Sunday afternoon.
