    Chidi a 49er

Deal believed to be for league minimum
With just a little more than two weeks remaining before their Sept. 7 opener, the San Francisco 49ers have made a late move to strengthen their defensive line, reaching a contract agreement with end Chidi Ahanotu.

The 10-year veteran, who played the 2002 season with the Buffalo Bills, had drawn very little interest in the unrestricted free agent market during the offseason.

Contract details were not immediately available, but it is believed that Ahanotu agreed to a one-year contract with a base salary of $755,000, the league minimum for a player with his tenure. The 49ers will be the fourth team with which Ahanotu has played in the last four years.

That would be a long limo ride.

ASK CHIDI AHANOTU whether he still thinks he can start in the NFL and he will give you a straightforward answer.

"I am a starter in this league," says Ahanotu, who has started 134 of 145 games in the NFL. "I've been starting since my rookie year."

Right now, though, the 32-year-old Ahanotu is simply trying to win a roster spot with the San Francisco 49ers as a defensive end. Ahanotu signed a one-year contract last week.

"Whether or not I'm starting here, who knows?" he said. "But I never worry about that. If they see fit to make me a starter, then fine. If not, I'll do whatever role they want me to do."
