Romanowski fined and suspended after fight

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- Oakland Raiders linebacker Bill Romanowski was suspended from Monday's practice and fined an undisclosed amount after punching and seriously injuring teammate Marcus Williams during a fight in practice a day earlier.

Williams' left orbital bone was broken and his nose was injured, according to coach Bill Callahan. The seldom-used backup tight end will be out four-to-six weeks.

Though Williams reportedly called Alameda police after the incident, no criminal charges have been filed over the scuffle, which occurred during a practice drill. Callahan doesn't expect charges to be pressed....

Tight end Marcus Williams, who was seriously injured during a fight with linebacker Bill Romanowski in practice, will not press charges against his Oakland Raiders teammate at this time, Williams' agent said Tuesday.

Appearing on the Dan Patrick Show on ESPN Radio, Williams' agent Lee Kolligian did not rule out the possibility of Williams pressing charges in the future.

Williams, a 14-game backup last year, will be out four-to-six weeks, ESPN.com's John Clayton reports. Williams' left orbital bone was broken and nose damaged in the fight, coach Bill Callahan said. In a two-pronged rash of bizarre circumstances:

Oakland-born tight end Marcus Williams was diagnosed with a fractured left orbital bone after being punched in a Sunday practice dust-up. Linebacker Bill Romanowski was fined for striking Williams and was suspended from the team for the remainder of practice and another day by coach Bill Callahan.

Some 24 hours later, Roland Williams -- a two-year starter for the Raiders who played hurt last season but had failed to pass a physical this July -- was given his outright release by the club as it trimmed its roster to 78.

Make no mistake, that's what Bill Romanowski is. He might try to disguise it, beneath his Raiders mask and helmet, but his record -- or is it his rap sheet? -- speaks for itself.

The punishment for attacking a teammate was not nearly strong enough. Bill Romanowski may have ended the career of second-year tight end Marcus Williams a week ago in practice, and all the Oakland Raiders did was send the linebacker to the corner until he promised to be good.
Oh, they fined him an undisclosed amount and banished him from the complex for one day. Upon his return, a supposedly repentant Romanowski issued mea culpas all around. What, no penalty lap around the practice field?

Because the NFL is not the real world. In the real world, the fry cook at McDonald's gets canned if he loses his temper and decks the cashier.

Violence is a keystone of football, but gratuitous violence, especially between teammates, leaves some players, such as Broncos tight end Shannon Sharpe, shaking their heads, though they know by a team's inaction it's all but condoned.

This is wrong, and it shouldn't be condoned - even overtly. People wonder why these athletes think that they are above the law. It's because they aren't held responsible for their actions even by their own teams!!

Tight end Marcus Williams, who was severely injured when punched in the face by linebacker Bill Romanowski during a Raiders practice in August, was released by the team on Wednesday.

He was placed on injured reserve following the altercation, which resulted in damage to Williams' eye socket and a tooth. Raiders senior assistant Bruce Allen said Williams had been deemed healthy enough to play and thus the Raiders were able to release him without an injury settlement.

"His doctor cleared him to play and so did an independent doctor,'' Allen said. "We released him so he could catch on with another team.'' ...
