Apparently Steve Mariucci didn’t blow out all the candles on his last birthday cake, because the Lions lost two key veterans in their 22-16 loss to Buffalo Thursday night at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Running back James Stewart, who did some of his best running of the preseason, and looked in top shape for the regular season opener against Arizona on Sept. 7, suffered a dislocated right shoulder when Bills defensive back Coy Wire hit him while he was fighting for a first down.

Both guys walked by my seats in the endzone. We gave them hell. We asked Stewart of he got the number of the Truck that hit him.

Running back James Stewart figures to miss several games -- including the opener Sept. 7 against Arizona -- but the news on his dislocated right shoulder was much better than the worst-case scenario.

Coach Steve Mariucci did not give a target date for Stewart's return from the injury he suffered in the Lions' final exhibition game Thursday in Buffalo, but surgery will not be required and Stewart is expected to begin rehabbing the injury soon.

Stewart, the Lions' leading rusher in each of his three seasons with them, was hurt six minutes into Buffalo's 22-16 victory Thursday night.

"There is no structural damage. It won't require surgery," Lions Coach Steve Mariucci said Friday after Stewart was examined. "It's a week-to-week sort of thing. It's hard to put a number of weeks on it because every dislocated shoulder is different.

"I would like to hope he'll be back by the bye week (Oct. 12, Week 6 of the NFL season)."

Stewart attended Friday's practice and worked out on a stationary bike.

Stewart's injury sets back Detroit's hopes to improve after winning just three games last year, and two the season before.
