    Rattay signs extension with 49ers

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Tim Rattay signed a $4.8 million, three-year contract extension before Friday night's exhibition game against the San Diego Chargers.

Rattay, who is under contract through 2006, received a $1.5 million signing bonus.

He is in his fourth NFL season.

"We're obviously very excited to have this done and have Tim remain with us," said general manager Terry Donahue. "He's worked very hard and has established himself with us."

Rattay was awarded the extension prior to the 49ers exhibition game against the San Diego Chargers.
