    Porter sustains non-life threatening injuries

DENVER -- Steelers linebacker Joey Porter is listed in serious condition in a Denver hospital with non-life threatening injuries Sunday after being shot at a sports bar.

According to Mike Sullivan, Porter's agent, Porter was shot in the buttocks. Doctors are still evaluating whether or not to perform surgery to remove the bullet. Sullivan said the injury is not career-threatening.

One person was killed in the shooting, which occurred in the early-morning hours. The incident took place at 1:47 a.m. outside of Denver's Best Sports Bar and Grille.

"He (Porter) was an innocent bystander. There was no confrontation or altercation that we know of at this time," said police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

That would be funny if not for the fact that someone was killed.

If his forty time ever slips after this, he's going to get tired of hearing it's because he's got lead in his pants.

Police consider gang activity in Porter shooting

DENVER (AP) -- Gang activity may have been the reason for the shooting of six people, including Pittsburgh Steeler linebacker Joey Porter, police said Sunday.

Porter was shot in the buttocks and was recovering in a Denver hospital, but his location was not revealed. The team said he would fly back to Pittsburgh possibly as early as Monday.

The man killed in the shooting, Christopher Wilford, 28, had a history of gang activity with several arrests. Porter was in the wrong place at the wrong time," said police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

Steelers struggle to deal with Porter's shooting

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Steelers linebacker Clark Haggans was preparing to return to Pittsburgh when teammate Joey Porter gave him a message from his hospital bed in Denver.

"He told me to just go out and play hard," Haggans said. "He said we've got to move forward. He's upset about everything, but he's really into the upcoming game and he wants everybody to play hard."

After going through training camp without a serious injury to a top player, Porter's shooting injury is forcing the Steelers to reconfigure their defense less than a week before Sunday's opener against Baltimore.

Joey Porter, walking with a slight limp but without crutches, made a surprise visit to the Pittsburgh Steelers' practice Wednesday, only three days after being shot outside a Denver nightclub.

The All-Pro linebacker hugged teammates and assured them that he was fine despite what he called ''the toughest thing I've ever had happen to me in my life.''

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter is sidelined with a gunshot wound, but that didn't prevent him from renewing his feud with the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

Porter and Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis engaged in a shouting match during pre-game warm-ups after an apparent misunderstanding.

Porter, dressed in sweats, was on the field during warm-ups when Lewis hollered to him. The stories differ after that.

Cowher rules Porter out of Sunday's game

Steelers linebacker Joey Porter, who was shot less than two weeks ago in Denver, will not play Sunday at Kansas City, coach Bill Cowher said Thursday.

Cowher, appearing on Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN Radio, said Porter will be downgraded from doubtful to out on the Steelers' injury report to the league, which will be released later Thursday.

On Wednesday, Porter ran during practice but did not take part in any contact work. He was listed as doubtful for the Chiefs game.

Fast healer: Steelers' Porter set to start

PITTSBURGH -- Just 2½ weeks after being shot outside a Denver nightclub, Joey Porter is returning to his rightful place in the Pittsburgh Steelers' linebacking corps.

"He'll start," coach Bill Cowher told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Thursday after the team's practice.

Porter will play at right outside linebacker Sunday when the Steelers play the Bengals in Cincinnati.
