SANTA CLARA - Orinda native Ken Dorsey's journey to becoming an NFL quarterback reached a critical stage Sunday, and as has been the case throughout his storied career, he came out a winner.

Dorsey beat out incumbent Brandon Doman for the 49ers' No. 3 quarterback position, and Doman was cut with 19 other players as the 49ers settled on their 53-man roster.

About an hour before the 1 p.m. roster deadline, Dorsey emerged from the team facility somewhat oblivious to the day's events, stating he was unaware of Doman's release.

"It's business as usual," said Dorsey, a Miramonte High School product. "I came in for a workout, watched some film and got a little treatment."

A few minutes later, defensive tackle Jim Flanigan walked out with his belongings after his surprising release. Flanigan had been penciled into the starting lineup when the club released Dana Stubblefield in February. But calf injuries sidelined Flanigan for much of the past month, prompting his release.

What led to the 49ers' picking Dorsey over Doman?
