He may want to sign within the division to get back at the Pats. And he'd get his shot Sunday.

We also get a glimpse of the Pats game plan.

I mean this guy is going to play this year. He's good. And we have the cap money. I bet TD is on the phone right now.

The Pats have been trying to deal with Milloy's contract for some time, but have been unable to reach an agreement. His old contract was unweildy, so this wipes the slate clean. He has changed agents since that deal was negotiated, so perhaps they will just negotiate a new contract.

As a Pats fan, I am hopeful this is just a contract deal and the team will re-sign him. As Bills fans, you should be all over this guy. Milloy didn't play well last year and is almost 30, but the guy is a warrior and will bounce back. It is rare a 4-time Pro-Bowl player and team leader becomes available. Milloy would be a great fit for the Bills, making their defense substantially better.

As a Pats fan, I hope they re-sign him.

Is Milloy really substantially better than Coy Wire? I don't mean 4 time probowler Milloy, I mean the guy who the pats thought was so expendable they cut him a week before the regular season.

I don't know the cap numbers but trading accelerates ALL remaining signing bonus into this year. Releasing him splits it between 2003 & 2004. One years amortization in 2003 and 2004 and beyond is pushed onto 2004 cap.

This is

Bills have plenty-o-cap space..........

It will likely cost some money to sign Milloy. He refused to negotiate off his $4.4M salary, and his agents (the Postons) are hard-line negotiators.

That said, he likely would look for a 1-Yr deal, with a franchise/transition tag prohibition. That way, he would basically play this year for a new contract and hit free agency next year.

As for his play, the Pats didn't "give up" on Milloy. This is a contract issue, flat out. Milloy's contract was too difficult to deal with, so they were forced to deal with this. He didn't have a great year last year, but neither did the team. He is a rare guy, a leader, a hitter and a guy that could help a lot of teams.

DraftBoy
09-02-2003, 10:17 AM
Milloy would be nice for a lower cap hit, I would sign him in the Kim Herring deal, at 2.2 a year

we only have 3 safeties right now... and i remember TD talking about us needing an extra DB...

we have MORE than enough and its not everyday that a guy like that is available.. i mean, look at the players available out there.. all scrubs, i wouldn't want TD to sign any of'em but this case is different!

If we cannot work out a long-term deal, I'm not sure this is worth it.

Please remember, he may be good, however, our Defense is not exactly easy to pick up. He wouldn't realistically be ready to go for a few weeks. Do we really want to sign him for what will effectively be 1/2 a season? Because that's about all he'll be effective for - if that.

Milloy can play free safety. he was playing some of that anyway since Harrison arrived in NE.. he was a SS in sandiego for years.

milloy is a pro bowl safety, and i am sure he could play FS better than anything we have.. plus the info that he could provide on the pats game plan could be invaluable for this week..

what the hell else are we sitting on 5.7 milllion for.. if this isnt it.. i dont know what it!!

Milloy was playing SS, Harrison was playing FS (and still is). The Pats play Right/Left S alignments, so it is not the traditional roles.

Milloy did play FS in college, but he is an NFL SS.

northernbillfan

Can we afford his contract? Do we pick up the rest of his 7 year deal if we sign him?

Milloy's salary, according to the NFLPA, jumped from $525,000 in 2002 to $4.4 million in 2003 in what was the fourth year of what was originally a seven-year, $35 million. That original contract had two tiers with the first a four-year $15 million portion that included $6 million up front. After the fourth season, the Patriots held an option to pick up the remaining three years for $20 million with a $2 million bonus payment.

We may have some room now with the cap, but would that put us close to the edge next year? As much I would like to see Malloy in a Bills uni, I don't want it to cost us a fortune and put close to cap hell.

Patrick76777
09-02-2003, 11:17 AM
He's a FA!

northernbillfan
09-02-2003, 11:19 AM
That clears it up for me.

But I think he will still want to get somewhere near the 4.4 Million he was going to get with the Patsies.

Ickybaluky
09-02-2003, 11:20 AM
Milloy likely would stay at SS. He isn't going to play a traditional FS role, it would be a waste of his talents. He is at his best playing up in the box. He is a difference-maker as a box S. He can't cover well at all, never has been as well.

The Pats defense will still be very formidable with or without Milloy, although certainly it hurts to lose a player of his caliber. Ted Washington solidifies their run defense, and still does. Their sub packages will be OK because of the depth they have with cover guys. The Pats defense is still very formidable.

The big question, IMO, is how the other players are effected. This has to be a shock to the team. It is more a mental shock than anything else. It will be interesting to see how it translates to the game on Sunday. It surely can't help.

I really have a good feeling about this. This guy is going to want to Jam the Pats. And he can do that on Sunday, even if he doesn't play.

Let's all hold our horses and not get ahead of ourselves.

First, how is he a free agent now? As I understand it he was cut. That means he has to go through a 24 hour waiver process. The teams with a worse record than Buffalo last year get a crack at him before Buffalo does. If his contract is as awkward for teams as we understand, any team considering picking him up will inquire about renegotiation before claiming him. If he won't renegotiate then teams have to weigh the benefit against the cost. If everybody deems his contract, as presently constituted, unacceptable and decline to claim him, then he's a free agent. Then the process of bidding takes place. Buffalo's in a good position as far as the cap is concerned to compete in that bidding, but it's not a given that he's a Bill by any stretch. The good news is that NE, despite fan hopes, has real long odds against being able to sign him again. They can't claim him, so he must clear waivers. Then they have to hope he doesn't bear ill will toward the Patsies for cutting him. Who knows what Milloy is thinking however. Is he just in it for the bucks? Then he goes to the highest bidder in free agency. Is he looking to stick it to the Patriots? Then AFC East opponents have the inside track. Stay tuned. It should happen faily quickly.

ArcticWildMan
09-02-2003, 12:01 PM
I don't think he has to go through waivers since he has played 4 seasons and was under contract.

How strong are his cover skills these days? The only spot we've got for him is FS. He's not going to play in place of Wire and Wire is definitely worse in coverage.

I agree that he's a good player, but I'm just not sure this is a good fit.

We can't just jump at every good player that becomes available just because we have cap space. There needs to be a spot for him. It's a stretch to sign him and move him to a different position than he's used to in a completely different defensive scheme.
