ORCHARD PARK - There were several things that went confusingly awry for the Tennessee Titans last week in their stunning 21-20 loss to Brian Daboll’s New York Giants (https://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/sports/nfl/titans/2022/09/11/tennessee-titans-score-ny-giants-saquon-barkley-stats/7977062001/).
But nothing was more eyebrow-raising than how Saquon Barkley ran over and around a run defense (https://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/sports/nfl/giants/2022/09/13/saquon-barkley-stats-ny-gaints-titans/69491772007/) that last season ranked No. 1 in the NFL with an average yield of just 83.5 yards.
“We had double-digit (missed tackles),” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said, lamenting the poor performance before adding more reasons for the failures. “A good player (Barkley), poor defense, and poor gap integrity. A couple of times it was edge; sometimes it was inside tackling. We’ll have to really re-evaluate what we’re doing.”

Barkley ran for 164 yards on 18 carries and scored one touchdown, then also powered his way across the goal line for the game-winning two-point conversion on a shovel pass that was essentially the same thing as a run. Barkley broke runs of 33 and 68 yards, and the Giants finished with a whopping 238 yards and a 7.4 average per carry.
