Pre-season starting in a couple days.

The later part of last season offered hope. From March 2nd to the end of the season they recorded 35 points, 12th in the NHL.

Goalie play will determine a ton. Cromrie arrives. Anderson and maybe UPL later, depending on health.

Will Quinn, Peterka and maybe a couple others earn a roster spot ? How will Rochester be stocked ?

Still think they're a year away from a postseason spot but let's see.

Go Sabres !

Hoping they make it this year, but it's a long shot and highly unlikely they get out of the first round if they do. Still, it would be nice to get some playoff experience for the young guys and, if not, hopefully they can at least make the season interesting by being in the hunt until close to the end.

The Sabres take the preseason opener...in OOOOOOOOVERTIME! They defeat Washington 4-3.

Dylan Cozens notched a goal and an assist for Buffalo. Tyson Kozak also scored for Buffalo(to give them a 2-1 lead midway through the 2nd), while Jack Quinn tied it up for Buffalo on the power play with 1:05 left in regulation. That led to Vinnie Hinostroza notching the winner 1:15 into the extra session.

Buffalo hosts Philly in the home pre-season opener Tuesday.

Buffalo made a number of roster cuts yesterday, sending quite a few down to Rochester(whose training camp opens Monday), returning Matt Savoie back to Winnipeg(WHL)and releasing many more from their PTO contracts(most of them will likely be with the Amerks).

Notables sent to Rochester include: Linus Weissbach, Brandon Biro, Isak Rosen, Lukas Rousek and Oskari Laaksonen. Among those released from their PTO's: Michael Houser, Michael Mersch and Ethan Prow.

There's one front row seat near the Sabresx2 goal on Oct 13, for about $250, or I can buy one Bills ticket in the sky for $300 on Oct 9.

Vinnie Hinostroza is going to be one of the odd men out this year if he doesn't get his scoring up. (He scored last night). But with Quinn & Peterka seemingly sticking and all the other youngsters pushing to make the big team, there aren't a lot of spots remaining. He and Asplund are at biggest risk of losing their spots. Both are pretty good players.

So, we might lose some pretty good players because we have too many better players?

You are 100% correct. Quinn went ice cold in the playoffs. 2 assists in 10 games while Peterka had 7 goals and 5 assists.

I am strictly going by what the media talking heads have stated this past month. Quinn is flying and getting good results. Locking up a spot on the 2nd line.

Peterka was scheduled for the 3rd line but is 50/50 for making opening night, due to playing a bit tentative and making some mistakes. Hinistroza may take his spot for now but I realize that's just the chatter. Sounds like they want to get him going better, which may indicate Rochester initially but we'll see. He had 68 points in the AHL regular season. Quinn had 61 in only 45 games once he returned from injury and was always the top guy for promotion.

I'm rooting for him and fully expect to see him sooner or later. Maybe it's just finding him the right 2 guys to play with on a line.

Top line is solid. Not Cup contender good, but solid. After that, who knows? There are a lot of unproven players who may or may not be good.

If Power lives up to his potential, the top 4 D are good.

I know I'm setting an incredibly low bar with this statement, but I'll be happy if the Sabres can be in the playoff hunt until mid-March or so. Make most of the season meaningful. It would be nice if we could actually make the playoffs and give the young guys some playoff experience, even if it means getting killed in the first round. I just don't think we are there yet.

True; Comrie didn't get much help. That said, a few observations: 1. At least they were in there battling to the end(save for the time they tried pulling Comrie for an extra attacker; Florida kept the Sabres pinned in their own end until it was way too late). 2. This game is a perfect illustration of how far the Sabres have to go until they're on the same level as, say, Florida. Ottawa, who's around the Sabres in terms of being relevant, is one thing. The Panthers are on another level altogether.

Just to be clear: the big draft debate was McDavid vs Eichel. Well, they’ve been better than us but neither team has really accomplished anything since then.

Last I checked: they still have McDavid, we no longer have Eichel, and we won, in their house after a long road trip.

In fairness. They've won playoff series since drafting McDavid. He's taken them to the dance. And gone into it.

I'd take that

Good start so far but one big complaint: Too many shots/scoring opportunities. In 3 games, they've been outshot every time and given up 36, 37 and 48 shots. Yikes. I just don't trust Anderson and Comrie to maintain that level of goaltending over the course of a season.

Roughly a year and a half ago, I said something to the effect of "i wish Tage Thompson was as good in real life as he is when I'm playing NHL on PS5." Well, he's not video game level good, but he has become a really good NHL player.

Makes you wonder what St. Louis and Krueger were doing with him.

The defense is very young, perhaps the youngest defense the Sabres have every iced. The pairings have changed in attempts for the Sabres to find the right person to pair with Owen Power. I think they broke up the Jokiharju/Dahlin pairing. Kevyn Adams kept talking about signing a veteran to sign to play with Power, but he did not do that. And Dahlin thinks he's Bobby Orr, always looking for the breakout rush. It'll get better, the more they play, but they could have used that veteran stay-at-home defenseman that never materialized, IMO.

Yeah Dahlin has scored in every game so far. Goals are always a good thing, but my concern is that his offensive success will only encourage him to join the rush, which will lead to defensive lapses. But you are right- it is a very young group and will probably stabilize as they get more experience.

That's dahlins game. He said he feels more confident in joining the okay cause he knows Samuelsson is back patrolling the blue line.

This is the new NHL with ideally 4 guys who join and move into the play.

It'll bite you in the ass from time to time, but that's the risk.

I think it often depends on who the fwd's are too. On an experienced line, someone will recognize that Dahlin is down low and cover the point after the initial rush. A younger guy may not recognize the situation, or may not be able to defend well enough to do it.

I don’t expect great things this season. The team is too young and lacks elite talent. But they are fun to watch and good enough to make it intersecting.

Awesome game last night. No one @ NHLN thought the Sabres would win this one (before the game started). Dahlin sets NHL record for defenseman with 4th goal in 4 games to start the season (no NHL defenseman has ever done that).

Dahlin LEADS the NHL in +/- at +6 now.

Granato sat Quinn and put Hinostroza in @ the Edmonton game. He had 3 helpers last night, the best of which sprung Mittelstadt who scored a back-handed, short-handed goal to make it 3-1 at the end of the 1st. Hinostroza & Mittelstadt's best game so far.

And.... Alex Tuch gets the hat trick.

The Sabres had Calgary pull their goalie after the end of the first period, but the Sabres scored 3 against each guy.

Eric Comrie wins road back-to-back starts. He is the FIRST SABRES GOALIE EVER to win 40 save back-to-back games. Take that Hasek/Miller/Crozier et al.

This looks like it is becoming Tuch's team. He fits the leader role really well.

Cromrie played well again. Bad giveaway right in front of him and a ref kicks a puck right to a Calgary player in the slot by accident.

40 + saves again shows the Sabres still need to work on their D, in spite of the 3-1 record.

I didn't expect great things either but we may be underestimating them. They look capable of competing for a playoff spot. I know I know. It's early and you have to see it first as do I. Maybe they don't lack elite talent. Maybe it's just young.

That annoyed me. There was nothing Comrie could do on that play. But IIRC the score was 3-1 at that point. Sabres were on the verge of a knockout blow but that allowed Calgary to stay in the game a little longer.

The Sabres (Girgenson) scored an empty net goal at ~ 3:49 left to play. The Canucks put their goaltende back in then the Sabres scored AGAIN (Olofsson). The Canucks looked listless, especially in the 3rd period.

Craig Anderson looked all of 27 years old.

Flames focus on play without the puck after first loss

After their first loss of the season on Thursday (6-3 to the Buffalo Sabres), the Calgary Flames got back to work Friday morning with a structured practice aimed at shoring up the team’s play without the puck.

Buffalo jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period, chasing Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom after he allowed three goals on 12 shots. The Sabres looked like the far quicker team throughout the evening, constantly hemming Calgary in their defensive zone and using their lateral speed with the puck.

“We had another s--- start [to] the game,” Flames defenceman Nikita Zadorov said of the team’s effort. “Too many turnovers. Too many odd-man rushes. We weren’t winning any battles down low. We knew what Buffalo was going to bring and that’s what they did, but we weren’t ready for it. It’s totally on us, totally unacceptable.”

Friday’s practice focused on defensive zone coverage and stopping plays in transition.

Some of you will recall that Zadarov was the Sabres 1st round pick in 2013. The 6' 6" Russian has found a home along the Calgary blueline.

With two defensemen out injured, the Sabres call up Clague.

Both Mattias Samuelsson and Henri Jokiharju have been put on injured reserve.

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) – The Buffalo Sabres lost Mattias Samuelsson to injury during the second period of Saturday’s game in Vancouver. After the game Don Granato said the injury isn’t as bad as first feared and it is positive, but Samuelsson will miss Tuesday’s game in Seattle as he's been put on IR.

That means Lawrence Pilut will likely make his regular season return to the Sabres. On Sunday, Buffalo called up Kale Clague from the Rochester Americans to have in Seattle in case there’s another injury during Monday’s practice.

Clague played four games for Buffalo during the preseason after signing a free agent contract with the Sabres over the summer.

The slow and steady build approach is shaping up nicely. This is a wild card team right now. Players are developing, the pipeline is rich. The cap space is ample for when the time is right to make a FA splash.

Less than a year after getting rid of he who shall not be named, the team is way better.

Back in the Briere/Drury days, Ovechkin was really the only good player on the Caps and they were in the early stages of a rebuild. When the Sabres would play the Caps, my friends who were Caps fans would always comment about how the Sabres had perfect tape to tape passing every time. It really was the difference in the game a lot of times. The Caps would have what would look like a good breakout or scoring chance, but the pass to set it up would be off just enough to disrupt the play.

Of course, more recently it's been the opposite. The Sabres have been the ones who just seemed a little out of sync on passes. Now, it seems like they've largely fixed that and it's producing results on the ice.

For like 38 minutes last night, the sabres felt off. Bad passes, odd man rushes. And the switch flipped.

That's a good sign. But they need a more complete, well rounded game.

They need better goaltending too. For a temporary solution, it's fine. But long term, especially if you hope to make the playoffs, they need an upgrade.

Nothing against either goalie, I like them both. And yes, it's a huge improvement over last year. But the bar needs to be higher

This may be a tough road trip but they will learn a lot from it.

The Sabres defense, when at full strength, is young and has been allowing a ton of shots on net. They were missing their 3 best, most veteran (*cough*) defensemen night. They iced:

Power (age 19) & Bryson (5' 9")
Casey Fitzgerald & Kale Clague (a recent AHL call-up)
Pilut (has very little NHL minutes) & Lybushkin (who is still nursing injury)

Missing: Dahlin, Jokiharju, Samuelsson

The Sabres won at home on Monday & Wednesday, lost away on Friday & Saturday against very good teams. While I would have like to see more out of Thompson, Okposo, and Olofsson last night, they never stopped playing. Notable hard play from Cozens and Peterka all night long was encouraging.

The Sabres need a Victor Hedman at veteran defenseman IMO.

Zegmus Girgensons stats (https://www.espn.com/nhl/player/stats/_/id/2968829/zemgus-girgensons).

Girgensons is off to a solid start. Maybe his best ever. While he has settled in his role as a checking forward here, he has 3 goals in the first 12 games and is a +1.

Remember when he was drafted? 2012 - 1st round #14 pick, behind Mikhail Grigorenko (#12) who is now playing back in Russia. Other Sabres picks from that draft were:

D - Jake McCabe (Chicago) - 2nd round
G - Linus Ullmark (Boston) - 6th round

Never figured Girgensons would be the one to stick from that draft class. But he fits his role well this year.

The defense has been horrid without Samuelsson and Jokiharju. Even with those guys its so young. Power is 19. The argument could be made he needs to be in Rochester this season. While I like Fitzgerald, he gets overwhelmed at times. Jacob Bryson is all of 5' 9" and was moved all the way up to #1 pairing with Dahlin. He's fast and he tries hard, but he's 5' 9". Loved the addition of Lybushkin initially. He is physical, but overall not a great defender. They need Samuelsson & Jokiharju back.

Power needs to shoot more when he's handling the puck in the offensive zone. He's too timid because he's new. He's too focused on trying to set up his new teammates.

Defensemen pinch to keep puck in and the forwards fail to rotate back
Not clearing out players in front of our goalie
Losing pucks in our own corner constantly
Faceoff % doesn't look good. I don't have the actual stats
Goaltending isn't getting much help.
Opponents standing 5 feet in front of our net all alone

2 on 1 breaks by our opponents is a constant. I never remember seeing so many. Our forwards get caught floating or in too deep all the time.

The scheming on D is currently bad.

They were using Skinner as their face-off guy vs Canucks. Was watching Canuck broadcast and they posted that Skinner was 50+% @ face-offs, but it looked like he was losing most of the face-offs in that game.

It looked like Anderson was frustrated at the play in front of him at times.

The old Sabres are back. 7th loss in a row.

6 shots on net on 8 power play attempts. No one in front of the net ever. Pass back and forth around the perimeter box and never shooting. Lost to the worse team in the division, Ottawa, 4-1.

Some guys have to get sent down. Krebs is useless. Bryson overmatched. His speed is not enough. Pilut has to go down.
