The Buffalo Bills (https://www.buffalorumblings.com/) on Thursday morning released the first two renderings of their new stadium (https://www.buffalobills.com/news/stadium-news), which remains scheduled to be completed in time for the 2026 NFL regular season.

If you like giant, golden statues of bison, you’re in for a real treat. The two renderings are viewable in the gallery at the top of this article, or at the link above.

Following the release, Bills COO and EVP Ron Raccuia joined WGR 550 to discuss the renderings, and also dropped a few more interesting nuggets about the stadium. While we didn’t learn much new from what we previously knew about the stadium’s design, some additional details emerged.

They should make so the visiting team is in the shade and snow in the winter.

Yes. There should be shade and snow machines to make it even darker and snowier on that side.

Honestly the lower bowl looks the same, but the upper layers are stacked closer to the field with a small lid for a roof. Pretty underwhelming design IMO given other new stadiums popping up.

Looks nice. Would be better if it was not in the middle of nowhere.

ESPN covered the story (https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/34889115/buffalo-bills-release-first-renderings-future-stadium), and the funniest paragraph is this....

Outside the stadium includes a plaza the team is calling "family circle" that features three large buffalo statues. The Bills want the plaza to be a gathering site year-round for the community and said the exterior was built to highlight "the team's desire for a visual identity that reflects some of the historical architecture of Buffalo, while also delivering a modern appearance." The exterior allows for some visual of inside the stadium from the outside.

Uhhhhhhhh......If they were really interested in the plaza outside the stadium will serve as “a gathering site year-round for the community....” they would build in the City of Buffalo......NOT Orchard Park.

What a joke.

And it seems that the race for governor has the stadium deal becoming an issue that the GOP challenger is promising to **** it up if elected....

As stadium talks continue, tentative deal for Bills becomes flashpoint in race for NY governor (https://buffalonews.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/as-stadium-talks-continue-tentative-deal-for-bills-becomes-flashpoint-in-race-for-ny-governor/article_7f069774-556b-11ed-a374-cfff25741392.html#tracking-source=home-top-story)

As the parties hash out the final details of the Buffalo Bills stadium deal, the agreement has become a flashpoint in the race for New York governor.

Republican Lee Zeldin on Tuesday vowed, if elected governor, to reopen the pact and negotiate an agreement that requires far less taxpayer money than the one crafted by Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul.

"We can absolutely have a better deal," Zeldin said in response to a question from a moderator of the Spectrum News debate (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EI0_5v6Ljdk).

snip...

People involved in negotiating other stadium and lease agreements say the sides in this case all want a deal to come together, but the longer the talks go on without finalizing the contracts, the greater the risk it all falls apart.

Further, according to state and county representatives, reopening the deal could prompt the Bills to ask for even more public aid and would allow the team to start talking to other cities once its Highmark Stadium lease is up after this season.

“If Congressman Zeldin wants to watch the Bills play in Austin or Orlando or St. Louis or San Diego he certainly could re-open the deal,” Peter Anderson, a spokesman for County Executive Mark Poloncarz, said in an email Wednesday.

WNY cannot do anything right when it comes to a football stadium. They ****ed it up 50 years ago, and may be on the way to ****ing it up in 2022.

As much as I want the Bills to stay in Buffalo and get a new stadium, it does seem like the taxpayers got a raw deal.

But, I think Zeldin is full of ****. He's just doing it to appeal to conservative and libertarian voters who don't like government spending. He can't just tear up a signed agreement because he doesn't like the terms, at least not without legal ramifications

Yeah it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. If it were a dome, it could be used year round for concerts, conventions, etc. Instead it'll be like now- pretty much useless after October. Yes, I know.... football playoffs go well into January, but people are accustomed to sitting in bad weather for football. That won't work for other types of events.

The history of WNY is clear.

If there is a decision to do something forward thinking and good for the community that will have positive ramifications for decades or fumbling and being cheapskates and letting fantastic opportunity slip through their stupid small minded fingers....they will **** it up every time.

I do believe the way the top is angled will help keep the wind out of the stadium and keep the fans dry from snow and rain which is a plus

The top is angled upwards which should deflect a lot of the wind

One of the most exciting things about the concept is that you'll be able to watch the game from the concourses instead of being cut off if you get something to eat or use the bathroom. The wind thing ya cool. Upper stands closer to the field, more crowd noise. Scoreboard looks disappointing. Is it grass or turf now? Should have built a dome for the extra few hundred million for year-round use.

Did they ever say how many more boxes they are putting in?

as far as open air. I believe we are having grass. Dome in Nashville?

I bet the Nashville Dome is cheaper too.

Yes like a....dome

But Peg is keeping the mothballs in his wallet even though he moved up big on the billionaire's list this year and he's already tripled his money on the Bills

The angle of that rendering might be deceptive. They did say it will cover about 65% of the seats. We'll have to wait for a plan view to get a better idea of what is actually covered.

The reports (https://buffalonews.com/sports/bills/renderings-of-new-buffalo-bills-stadium-show-nod-to-the-past-its-a-celebration-of/article_e388f090-55f0-11ed-84c5-4f211d87a738.html) are that there are several design features to help mitigate the swirling wind. That’s a good thing.

The top of the stadium is designed with a slight curvature. That shaped roof line gives it an "aerodynamic form, in the way that the wind would be rolling over the top of the building, essentially skipping off the canopy," said Jonathan Mallie, a senior principal and director at Populous (https://populous.com/), the architecture firm designing the stadium.

On a functional level, that will help drive Lake Erie winds over the facility, rather than inviting them to swirl around inside the bowl, as happens at Highmark.

The meshlike perforations will help absorb some of the wind, too, making the game day experience on stormy days a more comfortable one for quarterbacks and kickers – and fans.

"First and foremost, it's an outdoor stadium," Mallie said. "It's not like all the wind in the world will be blocked out. But what we had to do is come up with an application and usage of materials and form of the building that would, to the greatest extent possible, manage the wind and make it a bearable environment. Something that fans really haven't had all these years in Orchard Park."

The design is also to purposely help make the crowd noise even LOUDER. That’s a GREAT THNG!!!

'Football-first, very loud, very intense'

Elements of the still-ongoing stadium design – including the canopy, stacked levels and slightly open exterior – can be traced to some of the newer Major League Soccer stadiums (particularly the Columbus Crew's Lower.com (http://lower.com/) Field) and London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a soccer facility that was also built for use by the National Football League.

Raccuia said team officials visited "dozens of stadiums and venues" in and outside the United States. "We took what we thought were a lot of the best attributes of each of them," he said, "and tried to incorporate them into our program, which was (a) football-first, very loud, very intense stadium."

Matt Davison, a founder of the 25-plus-member Business Backs Buffalo Football committee, issued a statement applauding the designs. It read, in part: "From crisp sightlines, an extended canopy and covered seats, to acoustics and access, this design has been shaped with the football fan in mind."

+1 on the grass field.

A grass field is imperative for player safety. Artificial turf is the undeniable cause of more injuries as compared to grass. And the players know it....

Cooper Kupp: We should be playing on grass (https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/10/28/cooper-kupp-we-should-be-playing-on-grass/)

There were a couple of non-contact knee injuries at SoFi Stadium during last Sunday’s game between the Seahawks and Chargers.

While Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf (https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/football/nfl/player/49705/dk-metcalf) appears to have avoided a severe injury, Chargers cornerback J.C. Jackson (https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/football/nfl/player/9940/jc-jackson) is out for the year with a ruptured patellar tendon and Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said this week that the league should be looking (https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/10/27/pete-carroll-calls-for-nfl-to-re-examine-safety-of-grass-and-artificial-playing-surfaces/)at the difference in safety for players playing on turf fields, like the one at SoFi, and grass fields.

Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp (https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/football/nfl/player/9293/cooper-kupp) also plays his home games at SoFi Stadium and he was asked about the playing surface during a Thursday media session.

“It’s not even close (https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/34892255/rams-wr-cooper-kupp-all-nfl-games-played-grass),” Kupp said, via Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com. “I know there’s stuff going around the league right now, there’s some issues. Hands down, we should be playing on grass. Hands down, we should be on grass. And that’s all I’m going to say.”

OBJ was injured because of the crappy SoFi field. Tre’ White was injured because of the crappy New Orleans field.

When the field quality is taking out some of the biggest stars in the NFL, it is an issue that is screaming to be addressed.

SoFi is a particular failure. They spent $5 BILLION and they could not find the dollars to help ensure player safety??? Even being a dome, there are proven ways to mitigate the problem. All it takes is a relatively little more money.
