NFL warns teams about faking injuries

From time to time, defenses perhaps try to take the steam out of potent offenses that want to play with increased tempo by having one or more players pretend to be injured.

From time to time, defenses perhaps try to take the steam out of potent offenses that want to play with increased tempo by having one or more players pretend to be injured. The league office isn’t pretending to be unhappy about that.

On Friday, the league office sent a memo to all teams warning against “deliberate actions to delay the game.” Otherwise known as fake injuries.

‘Any deliberate attempt by a team and/or player to stop play unnecessarily; prolong or delay the process; improperly take advantage of a stoppage in play; or influence the actions of an ATC Spotter will be’ considered an ‘unfair act’ and may result in discipline, in addition to any on-field penalty assessed by the Game Officials.

‘Clubs and players are advised that, should the League office determine that there is reasonable cause, all those suspected of being involved in faking injuries will be interviewed and medical records will be reviewed. . . .’

“Clubs and individuals determined to be in violation of this rule will be subject to League discipline ‘to include a minimum fine of $350,000 for the club, a minimum fine of $100,000 for the head coach, a minimum fine of $50,000 for assistant coaches, if applicable, and a minimum fine of $50,000 for players. Please be advised that violations of this rule may also result in suspensions of persons involved, and/or the forfeiture of a draft choice(s), including for first offenses. Clubs, club personnel (including head coaches and assistant coaches), and players have been held accountable for their actions this season.”

Former President Donald Trump early Thursday touted the results of a new NPR/PBSNewsHour/Marist poll showing him ahead of President Joe Biden by 8 percentage points among independents.

Have any of you observed the faking of an injury?

Happens every game, I just don’t know how you fix it. Are you going to make the refs judge if someone is injured or faking?

happened in the Chiefs/Bengals game. The announcers even mentioned how the guy hit the ground when 2 guys came on and no one went out. So it was either take a knee or too many men in the huddle.

It's not like they're doing blatant flops like you see in soccer. In the NFL, lots of players end up on the ground on both sides on every play. All a player has to do is grab a body part and writhe in pain a little bit. How is the NFL going to know if they're faking?

And cramps go away. Hard to prove it isn't cramps. I think it is just to get a few people to think about not doing it but as was said above, don't know how you police it.

As long as we don't do it.

Welp.... the NFL has pulled the trigger (against the Saints of course)

The Saints and defensive end Cam Jordan weren't the only ones to find out the hard way that the NFL means what it says when it says to not fake injuries.

NFL accuses Bengals, Jessie Bates of faking injury, too

The Saints and defensive end Cam Jordan weren’t the only ones to find out the hard way that the NFL means what it says when it says to not fake injuries.

The Bengals and safety Jessie Bates have been $50,000 fined, too, for Bates cartoonishly falling to the ground as the Bengals were trying to get substitutes into last Sunday’s game against the Chiefs, per multiple sources.

Here’s the video. Bates can see the Chiefs coming to the line of scrimmage as two Bengals defenders rush toward the line of scrimmage. And he collapses to the ground.

Haven't noticed that in a long long time. Made me laugh though, because some teams would do that against the 90's Bills to try and slow down the no huddle.

There were some pretty good performances back in the day.
