Not a fan of the event, IMO the only legit info that comes from this is the medicals and the interviews.

The luster is coming off, it probably won't even be a 'thing' five years from now, maybe replaced by multiple regional combined 'pro days'.

However some do like it so...

Top draft prospect Jalen Carter subject of arrest warrants for reckless driving, racing in connection with fatal crash

University of Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter, one of the top prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft, is the subject of arrest warrants in Athens, Georgia, on reckless driving and racing charges as a result of an ongoing investigation into a fatal car crash on Jan. 15, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department said on Wednesday. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Police say their investigation found that Carter, 21, and Chandler LeCroy, a Georgia recruiting analyst, were each operating vehicles in the manner consistent with racing after leaving downtown Athens at around 2:30 a.m. ET, with evidence demonstrating that their cars were switching lanes, driving in the center turn lane and in opposite lanes of travel, overtaking other motorists, and driving at high rates of speed.

The best part about the combine is it kind of ends the sort-of break that front offices gave themselves after the end of the season. Now the offseason really kicks off.

The combine is NFL infotainment. It is like the Pro Bowl “skills competition”. Something the NFL can put on TV for football starved fans and reap advertising dollars.

Dan Campbell, HC of Detroit Lions, put the combine into perfect perspective (https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2023/03/01/dan-campbell-lions-grade-players-off-tape-not-running-40s-at-the-combine-in-pajamas/)....

Campbell said today that while he likes coming to the Combine so that he can meet some of the players in person, he considers the on-field drills to be a meaningless television show.

“I guess there is somewhat of a spectacle,” Campbell said. “To me it’s more, at this point, just to be able to sit with these guys. They get the medical during the week, but for us to be able to do these interviews is to me the biggest part of all this. It’s not even the working out portion. To me, you grade them off the tape, you don’t grade off somebody out here in pajamas, running the 40 with no defender around.”

Campbell said he likes in-person meetings with players, trying to get a feel for their competitiveness and passion for football.

“The meetings are great, the meetings are really pivotal. All the other stuff, whatever,” Campbell said.

Spot on coach, spot on.

2023 NFL Scouting Combine stock up/stock down, Day 1: Nolan Smith displays electric athleticism

INDIANAPOLIS -- The first night of workouts at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine (https://www.nfl.com/combine/tracker/live-results/) is in the books, with the defensive linemen and linebackers taking center stage on Thursday.

While several prospects chose not to perform all of the athleticism tests, many of those who partook in the events at Lucas Oil Stadium wowed scouts with their speed in the 40-yard dash, their agility in shuttle drills and their explosiveness in the broad and vertical jumps. Some exceeded expectations, causing their draft stock to rise; others displayed flaws in their speed and/or athleticism (or chose not to perform), hurting their chances of being selected on Day 1 or Day 2 when the draft begins in Kansas City, Missouri (April 27-29).

Adebawore looked very athletic for a 282-pound lineman, running a 4.49-second 40-yard dash (https://www.nfl.com/videos/adetomiwa-adebawore-runs-40-yard-dash-at-2023-combine) and registering a 37.5-inch vertical jump and 10-foot-5-inch broad jump. Adebawore's quick feet were on display during the on-field drills, as he hopped over and around bags like a stand-up edge rusher and worked hard dropping into space in linebacker drills. Though he measures under 6-foot-2, the former Wildcat has good length (33 7/8-inch arm).

Unheralded as a great athlete coming into this event, the 6-4 5/8, 249-pounder jumped 37 1/2 inches in the vertical and 10-7 in the broad jump while posting a 1.59-second 10-yard split. Campbell was as fluid and quick as any larger 'backer who took the field Thursday, which showed in a 6.74-second three-cone effort. Teams will likely project him as an immediate starter at the next level when they consider these results along with the instincts and toughness Campbell showed on tape during his Iowa career.

Young flashed as a pass rush star for the Volunteers in their 11-2 campaign last fall and may have secured a Day 2 selection with his performance in Indianapolis. He looked the part of a promising edge player with a 38-inch vertical, 11-foot broad jump and blistering 4.43 40 (https://www.nfl.com/videos/byron-young-runs-40-yard-dash-at-2023-combine). Kancey was listed at 6-foot on the Pittsburgh Panthers' website (https://pittsburghpanthers.com/sports/football/roster/calijah-kancey/12017), but he measured 6-1, 281 in Indianapolis. His arm length measured 30 5/8 inches. That's not typical for a defensive tackle, but it is a win. His 4.67 40 time was exactly what he needed, recording the fastest time (https://www.nfl.com/news/2023-nfl-scouting-combine-calijah-kancey-posts-fastest-40-yard-dash-time-by-dt-s) for a defensive tackle at the event since 2003, per Next Gen Stats. It bested Aaron Donald (https://www.nfl.com/players/aaron-donald/)'s time of 4.68 (https://www.nfl.com/prospects/aaron-donald/3200444f-4e13-4977-da01-4e2f082de38b) in 2014. Kancey came up short of Donald's arm measurement (30 5/8 versus 32 5/8) and did not participate in on-field drills, but his film clearly shows his short-area quickness and ability to stand up and swim past defenders off the snap.

The 6-2 edge rusher is relatively slight at 238 pounds and has less than ideal arm length (32 5/8 inches), but his blazing 4.39 40 (https://www.nfl.com/videos/nolan-smith-runs-40-yard-dash-at-2023-combine) (1.52-second 10-yard split), 41.5-inch vertical and 10-foot-8 broad jump opened some eyes. Smith did not participate in the field drills, but he had already done more than enough to help himself.

Carter broke out as a junior with the Cadets, racking up 15.5 sacks to get on scouts' radars. His production dropped in 2022, however, and his performance in Indy didn’t impress. Carter measured over 6-foot-6 but his arm length (33 3/8 inches) is not elite. He did not run the 40-yard dash and put up poor jump figures for an edge defender (30-inch vertical, 9-foot-1 broad jump). He must excel at his pro day to be considered a Day 2 prospect.

Mike Morris (https://www.nfl.com/prospects/mike-morris/32004d4f-5248-0831-1322-2ec4ee6accb4)
Michigan · DE

Morris was a first-team All-Big Ten selection as a stand-up rusher for the Wolverines in 2022, but his 4.95-second 40-yard dash at 275 pounds did not scream "elite edge defender.” Also, he didn’t help himself with a 28.5-inch vertical and 9-foot-2 broad jump. Morris fell multiple times during field drills, as his tight hips made it tough to change directions and turn the corner. There isn't much film to judge whether he can play at the five-technique in the NFL, so right now he seems like a man without a clear position.

Roy arrived in Indianapolis as a potential Day 2 pick. He did not run a 40-yard dash on Thursday night, however, and struggled in the tests he participated in (5.0 seconds in the 20-yard shuttle, 8.01 in the three-cone drill) at 305 pounds. During field drills, his movements looked more like those of a nose tackle than a quick three-technique who could be a pass rush factor. Roy will have a role on an NFL defense, but his combine efforts did not push him up draft boards.

Considered one of the most athletic linebackers in this year’s class, Sanders chose not to participate in any testing on Thursday. While the former Arkansas linebacker measured at 6-foot-4 3/8, his 235-pound frame and average arm length (32 1/8 inches) are unlikely to excite teams. He looked quick moving in a straight line during position drills, as expected with his lean build, but he’s not elite when it comes to change of direction. Sanders has received first-round buzz, but on Thursday he reminded me more of 2022 Day 2 selections like Troy Andersen (https://www.nfl.com/players/troy-andersen/) and Chad Muma (https://www.nfl.com/players/chad-muma/).

Byron Young (https://www.nfl.com/prospects/byron-young/3200594f-5512-6585-255e-5fa630259636)

Young weighed in at 294 pounds but did not move as well in position drills as some players who were 10 or 20 pounds heavier than him. He was upright and relatively slow in his movements during short-area agility drills. Young did not run the 40 and his vertical (26 inches) and broad jump (nine feet) did not compare well with the rest of the group. He’s displayed versatility playing different spots on the line for Alabama, but his lack of quickness as a sub-300 pounder probably won’t endear him to NFL teams.

Michigan cornerback DJ Turner (https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/football/nfl/player/64240/dj-turner) has not been considered by most analysts as one of the best cornerbacks in the 2023 NFL draft, but he may be changing some minds as he shows that he’s the fastest cornerback in the draft.
On his first 40-yard dash attempt today at the Scouting Combine, Turner was unofficially timed at 4.27 seconds. That makes him the fastest player so far at this year’s Combine, and one of the fastest ever.

Never have an issue with the combine. Those guys are giving their best to chase a dream.

Me either, this is about as raw as we’ll ever see these guys again. There everything is wide open for all to see, a wrong step, a few extra pounds, how big how small their hands are, how fast or slow, and even how smart or dumb they are and I like it. In a few months most of them kids will be tainted from reality forever. They will be able to say and do almost anything and the world won’t care as long as they can throw, run and/or catch. Most will use this privilege for good, some will abuse this and go bad and some will become legends. But for the next few days they are just kids fighting for everything and feeling life’s pressures.

It's no secret that the medical stuff and interviews are the most important facets of the combine to NFL personnel staffs, but the measurable stuff is not totally irrelevant. NFL scouts and GMs have impressions of the athleticism or lack thereof of NFL prospects, but sometimes what the testing reveals a discrepancy. For example, before the combine, observers thought Mike Morris, a big edge rusher, 3-4 linebacker type out of Michigan was thought to be freakishly athletic for his size. He ran a disappointing 40 and looked sluggish in his drills. That is going to force scouts to go back and reexamine film of his play on the field, and might drop him in the draft. On the flip side, DJ Turner's 4.26 will have scouts looking back at the Michigan cornerbacks college tape and wondering if some of the deficiencies he showed in college could be coached out of him. The college game film, interviews and medical exams are still more important, but combine measurable do have the potential to tempt scouts to reinterpret what they see on tape.

Glad they met with Flowers and Jaylen Reed. And a number of other receivers.

They also met with Simpson of Clemson, as a replacement for Edmunds.

If they are looking in that direction, they need to talk to Jack Campbell then. The big concern everyone had about him was his athleticism. His 40 time was good enough, esp. for someone with his instincts and recognition skills. He was probably faster than many anticipated.

But the rest of his testing, the cone, the shuttle and the jumping...were all first rate. There isn't any question about his athleticism now.

These meetings are the real value with the combine. The infotainment 40 yard dashes and QB’s throwing the ball with no defenders is eye candy that is pretty meaningless.

Interesting that (so far, it’s really early with only 18 of the allowed 45 interviews) that WR has the most interviews with 5. DL next with 4.

Not surprisingly they are doing their due diligence by interviewing RB Bijan Robinson, and IOL O’Cyrus Torrence.

Everything I have read cites TE being deep this year, and the Bills interviewing 3 TE’s shows they might be looking for depth in the later rounds.

Darnell Washington, the TE from Georgia. - Saw highlights of his workouts. I envy the team that gets him.

I consider him a weapon in more ways than one.

The more I read about this guy the more I want him!

"He's got a little nasty to him as well," Jeremiah added.

Mauch's testing numbers gave him a high Relative Athletic Score (RAS) at guard and center if he gets moved to those positions in the NFL. Mauch scored a 9.43 at guard and 9.51 at center. RAS grades players measurements and test scores on a 0-to-10 scale in comparison to players at the same position group.

Plus it looks like he will could be there for the Bills in round 2.

The only issue with Big O is that he basically disappeared in Georgia’s offense for long stretches week to week. UGA had a lot of weapons, so that may play a part in that, but Bennett was really good about spreading the ball around so he should have been more involved.

Routes appear a bit raw, but for a TE2 with that size, athleticism, and ability to play in-line or outside you don’t see many of those. Imagine him paired with Knox.

Ive still got a bad taste in my mouth from the playoff drought and taking Bjourn.

In 2001, we drafted Henry in the 2nd round. He put up 2 years of over 1400 yards.

In 2003, they thought Henry wasn't good enough, and drafted McGahee, because he was too good to pass up.

He had one good year, then decided video games were more important. Henry went on to another good year in Denver, and fathered more children than Old Testament Jacob.

After the too good to pass up McGahee busted, they drafted Lynch at no. 10. A breath of fresh air. Beast Mode..

But then along came the too good to pass up Spiller.

Barely played one year, had a fantastic year, then offensive guru Hackett turned him into a fullback. He was barely heard from again. Lynch went on to a fringe HOF career with Seattle.

That was 3 1st round picks on RB, 2 of which were deemed too good to pass up. For a while, there was a question of whether we'd take more DB's or RB's during the playoff drought.

And not only did we have no SB, we had no playoff appearances.

Build the OL.

Different game today. It matters.

The ideal RB these days in style is Christian McCaffrey. Run and catch. A throwback to San Fran RB Roger Craig, who once rushed for 1,000 and had 1,000 in receiving yardage in the same season..

They have to catch the ball and Allen needs to quit chucking long low % passes on 3rd and 3. The slot receiver and the RB can get those yards.

Robinson of Texas is the ideal fit but probably is gone by #27. Still, the RB needs to have pass catching ability. That's the fit.

I agree we need a RB for the situations you talked about, but without a OL it doesn’t matter who’s back there and if the line is great, it doesn’t matter who’s back there.

Name the last league or SB MVP RB?

A. Patterson league MVP 2012
T. Davis SB MVP 1997

I don’t buy the "Name the last league”... "MVP RB?” canard. Super Bowl MVP is not relevant because that is simply for one game performance, unlike the league MVP which is for the entire season.

The NFL MVP is mostly a QB award. And trying to denigrate the importance of the RB position because it’s been 10 years since the last time a RB won that award, can be said about every other position EXCEPT QB.

Does the fact that a WR has NEVER won NFL MVP means that the position is not valuable??? Or TE’s or ANY O-linemen....Safety....cornerback....since only one DL and one LB has ever won that award does that diminish their importance???

Of course not.

In fact, in the 55 years of the Super Bowl era, a QB has won it 40 times. The 15 times a QB has not won MVP, 12 have been RB. Of the three that won MVP but were not QB or RB, the only positions were, DT, Alan Page, 1971, K Mark Moseley, 1982, and LB Lawrence Taylor in 1986.

Since 2012 when Paterson won NFL MVP every single winner has been QB.

Since 2000, QB has won the award 19 of 23 times. The other four????....yeah....RB.

Was reading guard Andrew Voorhees tore his acl during drills......came back for the bench press with a brace using crutches....and put up 38 reps of 225 lbs. Gotta love the drive in that kid.
